The requirements are severely blown out of proportions, it's something some game devs will do to promote new hardware. If it can run on a console you can run it on your old average computer. Especially if you turn off NVIDIA TurdWorks.

I can run unmodded skyrim at 60fps no problem, skyrim with texture and lighting mods 60fps with drops in big cities. Strangely enough I can't get a decent framerate in new vegas or 3, so I don't have a lot of hope because the whole game is optimized so poorly

If you can get past the simplicity then Skyrim can be enjoyable, at least with mods. Oblivion I had a lot of fun with even on it's own.

Morrowind is still the best. Oblivion is ok (Shivering Isles is a MUST, probably one of the best expansions to any game ever), Skyrim is utterly forgettable (not sure if mods make it better or not). FO3 is good for exploring and has a better wasteland vibe, FONV has better writing, difficulty, expansions, and characters.
