You use to just be able to go down the river some and find a new place to fit in.
Then it was across the empire/nation.
Then it was to other empires/nations.
You could go out west, you could go south, you could go north, hell you could even go east.
You could go anywhere and start life a new.
None with the inter connectivity of everything, you can't really do that. You can't move to a new state/providence and start a new life, the old one will have to carry over. Nobody hires someone with no proper documents.
You can hardly even move to a new county and do that, maybe be able to do it in some shitty third world nation, but you can't move out to somewhere half way civilized without your old life following you.
I wish I lived in a time where I could just go down to the town over and become a completely new person with no one being the wiser or even being able to become wise to who you were before.

But if we look to the days before the internet, specifically the 70s/80s:
