Wilmer McLean was an American farmer in the mid-1800s. In 1861 he was living in Manassas, Virginia when the Civil War broke out. The first major engagement between the armies took place on the grounds behind his farmhouse near Manassas. Wilmer took in wounded soldiers and after the battle immediately moved further South, away from the capitals of the Union and Confederacy that Manassas lay between.
Fast forward four years later, McLean moved his family to rural Central Virginia, the town of Appomattox Courthouse. The war was in its waning days but Lee's Army of Northern Virginia still traveled through Virginia, directly into Appomatox Courthouse. When he knew the war was lost, Lee sent a messenger to the Union generals stationed in Appomatox. He requested a place to meet in order for his army to surrender, and the first suitable structure happened to be the home of Wilimer McLean. McLean had been so sickened by reports of the armies coming to his town that he refused to leave his bedroom, but after some prodding by the Union troops he reluctantly agreed to let the ceremony take place in his house.
So Wilmer McLean can rightly declare the Civil War started in his backyard and ended in his living room.
