Ask an autistic rowboat junior doctor anything
>>
>>24089385
Are you rich or is that just a meme
>>
>>24089450
Nope. If you divide my salary per hour, I'm probably not far off minimum wage.
>>
So what is this on call thing? Does it mean you can't refuse to come in to work if they call you outside of work hours?

captcha is boats lel
>>
>>24089539
As a junior, I spend all of my on call shifts onsite during which I barely have time to go and get a drink let alone fuck off home.

If it's a day on call, I spend it admitting new patients from the admissions unit. If it's a night on call, I'm admitting while also looking after every surgical patient in the hospital. Same goes for weekends.
>>
>>24089474
What's your yearly salary?

Ausfag final year med student here, and I'll be earining 70k AUD + overtime which apparently works out to be about 100k overall, depending on rotations.
>>
>>24089588
Doing that for "not far off from minumum wage" doesn't sound worth it. Do you at least have any prospects of an improved salary and/or work hours? Otherwise might as well work at mcdonalds, sheesh

What are your views on Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, are they physical or mental?
>>
>>24089957
Funny you should mention that...

but it will pay off mid career right? r-right?
>>
Why do you arseholes think you deserve more money than everyone else? Every sector of public service has had to find savings to pay off the deficit Labour created, and doctors are no different. You save lives? So do police officers. So do government ministers who keep us safe from ISIS. I have absolutely no sympathy for overpaid doctors who want even more money from the taxpayer. If you want more money, earn it like everyone else. Work more hours or get a second job.

Is depression real?
Is the "fucked chemicals in brain" story a meme, as some Robots boldly claim?
>>
OP, depression and mental health is just bullshit in general, right? Depression is overprescribed to attention seeking women, right?

This "mental health deserves attention" maymay in the british media is pissing me off. I don't want government bureacrats to get free reign to label people as mentally ill (i.e. not accepting enough of islam).
>>
>>24089906
Currently, about 30 grand (GBP). Amazed that you're paid as a student.

>>24089957
Salary goes up steadily each year. However the government is forcing through a new contract which could see our pay cut by 30 percent along with a forced cap on locum work.

>>24089968
I don't doubt their symptoms, but their source is entirely psychological via learned behaviours and reinforced roles.

I would rather not have my surgeon working at night at Mc Donald.
>>
>>24090070
They get paid more because of hellish working hours and conditions plus they literally have to juggle human lives on the regular. I don't think it's unfair.
>>
Oh yeah, and I guess the obvious question: Does your job get women treating you as a Chad as soon as you mention it?

Is it true that most medical students are women who will quickly quit their jobs or go part time?
>>
>>24090217
>They get paid more because of hellish working hours and conditions plus they literally have to juggle human lives on the regular. I don't think it's unfair.

You're making it sound like there's a shortage of people wanting to become doctors, which is of course nonsense. They all knew what they were getting into.
>>
>>24090070
We aren't asking for more money. We're asking to not have our pay cut by 30 percent. I already work plenty of hours (many for free), thanks.

>>24090105
Yeah I think depression is real. We don't have a great biological theory for the cause, though. Any monoamine theory is clutching at straws by using backwards logic on the basis of response to drug therapy. Which doesn't really make sense when there are anti-depressant drugs which have the opposite pharmacological effect but are just as efficacious.
>>
>>24090178
No no, I'm saying that's what I will be earning next year.
>>
>>24090232
Being a doctor always bumps you up a few points, yeah. But then the reality is usually a bit shit when you're never around to take them out anywhere.

Yeah, many of my female colleagues are very keen to go part time.
>>
>>24090217
That's not true at all. Most doctors become GPs and work 9-5 with generous overtime if they chose to take it. They are not "juggling human lives" they are treating people with the sniffles. Don't be fooled, hospital consultants are a tiny minority of the doctor population and are paid appropriately. The junior doctor population is even smaller and non of them stay as junior doctors for more than a couple of years. This whole protest is about doctors with cushy jobs and inflated salaries demanding yet more money for doing fuck all.
>>
>>24090359
For the record, I don't know many GPs that work 9-5. The notion of overtime doesn't really exist in the NHS. You can do work as a locum which is sporadic and short notice. And the rates are now being capped drastically so it's not really worth it.
>>
>>24089385
If I pretended to have a mental illness and was a good actor, would you be able to spot it? Are you trained to spot fakers?
>>
What can I do to get rid of herpes cold sore on my lip within 2 days?
>>
>>24090359
Also, a 'junior doctor' is any doctor below consultant level. This could be up to nine years post-graduation, longer if you take time out to do research (which a majority do in order to progress).
>>
I have a few friends who are doctors and I would not say they are any cleverer than I am. To be truthful once you know how to do any particular job it is always easy. If it does not seem easy then you are not yet good enough.
>>
Is the /fit/ meme of doctors looking down on atg squats and deadlifts true?
>>
>>24090428
Depends. It's pretty easy to fake depression. Anxiety is slightly harder. Psychosis is very difficult to fake and you can spot the malingerers a mile off.

>>24090448
Not much really.
>>
>>24089385
What level of a junior doctor are you? I'm an FY2 and according to that pay calculator I'll be losing 25% of my wage with the new contract when I start CT years. Also the proposed new rotas are totally fucking retarded.

>tfw failed MRCS Part B yesterday
Admittedly I've done it 1-2 years earlier than the majority but still not a good feel.
>>
>>24090485
>Psychosis is very difficult to fake and you can spot the malingerers a mile off.

How do you spot them? What gives them away? FYI I successfully faked aspergers coupled with schizophrenia and got into Support Group ESA. Did I get a dud doc or am I an Oscar-level performer?
>>
>>24090473
I would agree that you don't have to be a genius to be a doctor. Just hard working with a good memory. You also have to be reasonably coordinated with your hands and be able to talk to people.

Generally, I'm shit at maths and my knowledge of hardcore biochemistry is limited.

>>24090477
Not really. Personally I enjoy powerlifting and it's nice to see people doing anything physical given how many diseases are self-induced through poor lifestyle.
>>
Is there any correlation between university ranking and quality as a doctor?

How much student debt would a medical student have after university if they went to uni this year?
>>
>>24089385
how can i make myself ill the next 24 hours so that miss next weeks exams with a legitimate reason. Also dont let the cunt do you down, the tories always have a high turn over in the dept of health so he might well get forced out of his job before he can fuck yours.
>>
>>24090499
I'm an FY1. The DoH calculator is rigged to fuck. Genuinely, until we see clear, transparent financial models of how our earnings will change, fuck knows what will happen.

>>24090537
Usually because people don't really have a clue how said illnesses manifest and generally go on media representations which are often wrong.

Things like schizophrenia can be remarkably subtle when you're only seeing someone for 10 minutes.

>What can I do to get rid of herpes cold sore on my lip within 2 days?

Not OP, but a FM resident robot doc.

Early action is best. Try putting on Abreva (docosanol) at the first tingle before the sore erupts.

If you get the frequently you might consider long-term suppression therapy with something like valgancyclovir.
>>
>>24090550
In the UK, the universities with medical schools are generally pretty highly ranked anyway.

There were some papers to suggest that Oxford and Cambridge produce better marks in postgraduate exams but in practice, I don't notice any difference in my colleagues.

Debt would obviously depend on what country you're in. The student finance system has also changed radically since I was a student.
>>
>>24090594
Oh I see, so basically you spot the fakes because they just try to imitate movies without doing any research? I did a lot of research into my "illness" and I used to visit someone in a mental hospital so I got to see how they acted, the subtle ticks, and often it was more what they DIDN'T do that was odd (eg someone tries to shake your hand, you just look at it pensively instead of shaking it)

>>24090636
My bosses have always said Oxbridge students are incredibly clever but not practically useful. Seems to be the case based on people I have worked with as well.
>>
>>24090699

Working in general surgery (upper GI) going into respiratory, right in time for winter yay. Ortho is cool, psych is shit.

Got my ballot here and written, yet to post it though. Got it yesterday.

Yeah it's all well and good knowing the specific mutation for whatever channelopathy, but at the end of the day, does anyone really give a fuck?

>>
>>24090802
At least it isn't geriatrics or paeds in the winter. Should be less busy than GenSurg but your on-calls will be worse, medical on calls are always shit (they are worse if you are in a small dgh and not a big city hospital). Although I'll be honest, my Ortho on-calls are pretty bad since all our NOF patients have dementia and loads of co-morbidities and the Ortho reg on call understandably doesn't know about how to manage any of it. And yet our bosses get pissed off at us for not phoning the ortho reg in the middle of the night when an ortho patient is deteriorating. Even they say they wouldn't know what to do and to call the med reg instead.

And yeah I've worked with Oxbridge guys who have done 1 single cannula during their med school time and are understandably fucked when it comes to working for real.
>>
>>24090950
If i was going to kill myself, my choice of method would be an insulin infusion with a beta-blocker overdose. Goodnight sweet prince.
>>
>>24090989
That requires too much gear m8
>>
>>24090971
Yeah the medical rota looks worse but they seem to have more support than we do currently.

Hence the need for orthogeriatricians. I know that feel when it comes to senior support for a surgical patient with a deteriorating medical condition.

Been told by my reg to bleep the med reg to deal with haemodynamically stable AF for christ sakes. It's like, no thanks, I've got this.
>>
>>24091049
I was actually quite lucky that I worked in a tertiary centre for Vascular Surgery when I was doing GenSurg (Vascular) so my surgical regs seemed to be quite good at handling medical things. But yeah when I was working in Geriatrics it was so helpful to know the med reg would be around when you were on call at all times. Those poor guys, being the med reg must be so rough.

And yeah senior surgeons call the med reg too soon a lot. We had a lady who had chest pain and a Troponin of 5 and my ortho consultant said "is that high, do we need to repeat that?" But ask him about the fracture classification for every bone and he'll tell you easily.
>>
>>24089385
Whats an rowboat junior doctor anyway? Is this an american thing or do you mean to say that you're an intern at an murican hospital or something?
>>
>>24091455
Well senior surgeons usually don't know shit about internal medicine so they always ask no matter who you are.

>>

Funny thing I've worked in vasculary surgery as well for a time. But like all surgeons they only knew anything about their own specialty and nothing about anything else really. Plus all the female surgeons were complete assholes for some reason. They also did none of their paperwork ever so I ended up doing a shitload of their paperwork for them, which in some way was nice because it gave me some routine in doing paperwork in general.
>>
I fucking hate doctors.
>>
>>24089968
They are literally always mentally deficient female patients. You can always tell if disease is more of a psychological in nature if almost all the patients are female. And in both those cases they almost always are. The sad thing about the current society is that you can't just straight say that they are women fucked up in their head but have to pretend as if they had a somatic disease.

UK is fucked. Nurses in America make 70k in my state, which has some of the lowest cost of living. My cars insurance is $900/yr, rent in very nice area, the nicest area, is $1500 max, utilities included. Cheap is half that, utilities included of course. If you wurwere willing slum it in the ghetto you could probably find a place for $350, utilities separate though.

I heard bong nurses make like 20k. Fuck that. Being on call is awesome in America. You get paid to be at home, and if you do get called it's overtime.
>>
>>24093604
I'm pretty sure bong nurses make 40k at least. Depends of course what their training level is.
>>
>>24093604
Anon I don't think you understand the difference between USD and Pounds
>>
>>24093996

That's still pretty sorry considering bong nurses work harder than burger nurses . their cost of living is higher too. 70k is just for community college level here. You get a masters and pay could double depending on what advanced practice you go into.

>>24094086

Exchange rate is 1.5, so 35k from 20k good boy points to usd. I'd illegally immigrate to Poland if I made that much in UK.
