So ur starting in this art, eh?. Well i reccomend u download photoshop cs6, thats what i use and that has alot of tools that can make everything more easy, i dont use gimp so i dont know how to explain what i do xD I use Levels, exposure, High Pass filter and a bit of burn tool if needed to shade a bit.
