VNDB is a good source for VN information, and it has a good working search system with good tagging.

For downloading I usually use http://sukebei.nyaa.se/ sukebei has most things of +18 things from Japan. When searching for a VN I suggest searching for the Japanese name as that will have more results, and for a lot of English torrents they include the Japanese in the name as well. Not to say that searching in English won't have any results, it will, but not as much.

Some visual novels has never had a official release in English and for those you some times have to download the Japanese download and find an English patch to apply yourself.

As you can see in picture attached. The visual novel Saya no Uta has had a official release, but before that there was fan made English translation patched. The links you can see for the patched takes you to a separate page where there will be information about who developed the patch and where to get it.
