This little creature is the first life form on this planet. A single celled organism destined to start a long line of descendants, slowly evolving over thousands of years.

You don't have to evolve the most recent evolution. You can edit previous iterations which creates new branches which lead to entirely different creatures
Cell concentrates food in certain areas(the bubbles), allowing it to survive periods of drought or damage.
