You walk into your room. The same broken down walls, the same broken down roof in the same broken down shack. However, today is special. It's your birthday.

There is a tradition in the Oldham village. On a boy's thirteenth birthday, he is sent into the western forest and must survive for a week on his own. Over the last decade fewer and fewer boys return from the forest. Those who do speak of the feeling of constantly being watched, their food going missing, and laughing in the night.

Lucky for you have one more year to prepare. You’ll have many options and opportunities to increase your odds of surviving.

You get up and inspect yourself in the mirror. The bruises from last week are finally gone. But you'll have a new set by the end of today, you're sure of it. You've always been the village punching bag because of your...

Working on improving your magic sounds like the best idea right now. You trek to the edge of the forest everyday for absolute solitude. Calming your breathing you begin by focusing on making snow and ice. Making ice is beginning to feel natural to you. You notice near the end of your practice one day that the ice you make through make seems to melt slower than natural ice. Again despite losing concentration during some attempts and covering yourself in frost, you never feel harmed or even really uncomfortable because of the ice magic.

You decide you should start running to and from where you need to go to build up your endurance and stamina. Even with your brief training with magic you know it may not always be there in a time of need and running to get away from a situation that has turned south may be your only solution.

Maybe making a supply cache isn't a bad idea. It's still a ways out but the sooner you start the more you caches you can make. Dried nuts and berries is the best you can do for now, can't be planting good foods just yet. Even if you did you don't have much to spare for a cache right. Maybe you should go steal some food? Or should you try earning your food? A decision best left for later.
Now you'll return to training and studying magic. Ice is nice, ice doesn't kick you while you are down or sucker punch you when you aren't expecting it. Compared to when you first started magic you might actually be able to really hurt someone now. Continue to focus on this spell, try something new, or try seeing if there is a book that might help you? Hmm decisions, decisions

Home sweet home. The roof leaks, the floor creaks, it has a draft, the door is falling off its hinges, and thanks to that little shit Francis it has a giant dick painted on each of the outside walls. It's not great... it's shit really but it's all you got. You manage to scrounge up some nails and get the door straight in the frame. It doesn't squeak so that's a plus.
Learning a spell shouldn't keep you from enjoying the old fashion way of hurting someone, kicking the ever living shit out of them. Hey it sounded like those bastards from the village have fun kicking your shit in. Why not try show how much fun it is to be on the receiving end. You head into the village looking for trouble. The schoolhouse will be your best bet if you actually want to win a fight. You arrive and find that the focus of torment isn't on you today. Three older boys are throwing a doll between them with a girl with red hair running between begging for them to stop. They only laugh and tell her that they heard her mother was cheaper than a loaf of bread. A choice has to be made

I'm not a hero or a savior so don't thank me" She just smiles "It doesn't matter you did save me and I'm happy that you did" She looks outside and starts running out the door "Sorry I need to go. And thank you" and she's gone.
Hmm guess it's time to head home. You give Francis a final kick in the back. Today has been an oddly good day.

During your last fight you briefly thought about icing over the floor but in the heat of the moment you didn't think it was a smart idea to experiment with magic. Now in a controlled environment you try out your idea. A sheet of ice covers the ground in a 1 by 1 meter area. You can make the area of effect larger with practice or maybe experiment trying to get the effect when someone gets close. You feel the sensation of being watched but you can't find your voyeur. Maybe you need to practice deeper in the forest

Deciding to explore deeper into the forest for more seclusion you come across a rock face with a flat landing on top. Climbing up and down this before and after any other training definitely will improve your endurance and there are enough outcrops that you should be able to catch your breathe if needed. There are 8 landings to rest on and you are determined to only use every other one. With a few close calls you make it to the top of the landing and survey your surroundings. Total seclusion, Perfect.

You decide to come back to that ice trap spell you were tinkering with. After several different methods and some luck you've found that making a small hollow ice ball and then having it be stepped on is the easiest method of getting the spell to work.

After your recent successes with magic you permanently dedicate free time to magical study until further notice effectively making it a free action but can still be picked again to double the efforts.

If you are going in to a forest the simplest choice for a weapon is a hatchet or an axe. Both a tool and a means to defend your self it just makes sense. You know many homes will have an axe handy but a hatchet would be more appropriate for your size

A hatchet is the tool you need. Smaller lighter and easier to hide it's perfect. You know for certain the trader on the opposite end of the village has one for sale. But you don't have a lot of money and you are sure if you did it would be "no good" coming from you. But you do have something known as the five finger discount. That hatchet is yours he just doesn't know it yet. You watch from a far as he conducts his business. After a transaction he has his back turned just for a moment. You could take it then he might not even know it was you. Or you could throw stealth to the wind and just rush in and run like hell. If the guards find out you get an iron boot ass kicking for sure.

Ceasing your chance you grab the hatchet by the handle and go to swiftly leave. The sound of metal hitting metal rings out. You freeze. Experience tells you this is gonna hurt and running only makes it worse, that still doesn't prepare you for the kick to your back sending you to the ground.

A boot heel grinds into your hand "Should take your hand but no one would buy freak hand" Gods how does he get any trading done when he sounds this stupid. "Get away from my shop before I kicka yo ass good. Make me lose money gonna have to sell it for cheap, freak touched no good bad luck" He gives you a swift kick to your side pulls you up by your collar and shoves you off. Well that turned out fantastically. You get yourself into a small alleyway and use some magic to heal the new injuries you received. A few months ago you'd have been hurting a lot worse. Guess some of your training is working
You close your eyes a minute trying to think where another hatchet would be. Thunk. You look next to you and there is the hatchet you tried stealing lodged into an empty barrel. A woman stands over you, her bright green eyes look at you with sympathy, rather than disgust. You look down the alley and see a familiar face peeking around the corner...

Technically speaking it's possible to combine weapon training, strength training, and endurance training here.
By strapping on weight to yourself, you gain strength. By using the weapon on a practice dummy or other target, you become more skillful. By doing this for a very long period of time, hours and hours, with only very minor and minimal breaks inbetween, you gain endurance.

The hatchet fits well in your hand. You make a snow dummy to practice on and just get an overall feel of your new weapon. Trying the back of the axe head to bash and crush seems effective as well but you'll need more practice. For a while you play with idea of throwing your hatchet but you aren't sure you want to learn a skill where there isn't a guarantee of getting your weapon back. You try anyways and find it extremely satisfying when if sticks in your dummy's head.

The strength regiment you made is simple. Rock climbing. You spend the next few weeks climbing up and down only using more and more difficult paths. When that becomes to easy you load up a rucksack with rocks and climb. Your hands become rough and gritty with your grip improving greatly

Looking at this, I believe we should raise our magic and weapon skill as much as possible.

Someone incredibly skilled with both magic and weapons is formidable as shit, regardless of strength and endurance. They're likely to finish fights as soon as they start anyways, with how skilled they are.

Strength and endurance can't hurt, after that, though.

Trying to hone battle-precog would be good too, stay three steps ahead in the middle of a fight.

You'll be trying to combine your two primary forms of offense for this month's training. The first idea that comes to mind is enchantment. You know enchanting is easy enough a retarded dwarf could do it. You just need magic and patience. After accidentally freezing the weapon to the ground and to your hand you might be getting the hang of this. Close inspection reveals though the cutting edge is rounded off with a thick layer of ice, it takes about a week before you can regularly keep a sharp edge and get the chilled effect. You can't get the enchantment to last permanately, maybe additional steps or items are required.
Satisfied with the results so far you try something more advanced, making a copy of your weapon out of ice. Even with the weapon right in view it's difficult to even keep the shape of this Ice hatchet close. Not only that the distribution of weight is all wrong. You discover that lengthen an enchantment while pulling away the hatchet makes the shape and gives you a respectable cutting edge it still won't be weighted correctly. You toss the Ice hatchet away in anger, it's seems you don't have the knowledge or ability to redistribute the weight. Thunk. Shatter. You look where you threw the Ice replica and you see part of the axe head still stuck in the tree while the rest is at the base in thousands of pieces. You might not need it to survive a fight just a throw. It's literally a throw away weapon you can use it your enemy can't. Modifying the shape makes up for the weight and practice leads you to consistently stick the target.

While dealing with one of the few merchants who accepts trade with you, you notice a man walking down the street with odd looking shin and arm guards. "What are those?" "Bloody idiot thinks if he weighs his arms and legs down and just walks around he'll get stronger. Bunch of crap if you ask me"
Weighted clothing, let's you train strength and endurance while doing daily actives but will slow movement and causes quicker fatigue until acclimation

After a minute or so your vision becomes clear. You are on your knees, Francis is front of you. His face is bloodied but he is smiling. "Kiss my boot and I might be kind to you" You spit in his eye a reaction he had not anticipated but he responds with a hard kick to your jaw. "I'm giving up fun times at the festival for this you piece of shit now listen here..." The world fades away and you are back in the shack. Francis is still an idiot in the future. He gave you a good guess on when his crew will jump you. 6 weeks is the summer festival. Enough time to plan something. This time you better make sure he stays down.

Francis is on your mind while you train. Your attacks grow more ferocious, more cruel, more sadistic. It feels intoxicating, you beat dummies long since destroyed. You black out. You wake up, near what you'd guess is midnight, drenched in sweat. Around you is the remnants of your frenzied rage. It will take days to replace all these targets. But you don't care if this had been against Francis and his goons he'd be dead ten times over. Over the coming weeks you refine your frenzy so don't wear yourself out to exhaustion. While frenzied you don't have access to your magic, even enchantments dispel when you enter a rage.

Random Event: Lost Property
Early in the morning you over hear some one complaining about losing a treasured book from their collection and they will pay anyone who finds it. You think if it was so important why they took the risk to lose it. Later that day while on the outskirts of the village you come across a book sitting on a lone stump. With no one around you it only makes sense that it is the lost book. Taking the book home you discover that it's filled with knowledge on spells and alchemy but it's a difficult read and would require a lot of time and effort to understand its contents

sort of an area of effect chilling spell? sure id get behind that. i think until we become much more powerful we should just make it a blizzard with painful stinging snow/hail or sharp ice. at least until we are really able to freeze to a veeery low temperature, as someone from the NE of the US, cold doesnt become uncomfortable until its about 25 F (-4 C) and its not really painful till about -20 F (-30 C)

When you realize there are step by step drawings every 5 or 6 pages the contents become clear. While many spells and processes require ingredients or mana then you have access to, some show you more efficient process to collect and store mana but most importantly you learn how to use other elemental magic. and many other tips and tricks. Over the course of the month your mana supply has increased by nearly 50 percent, you start experimenting with poison infused spells and ice traps have an increased range to an area of 2m. Francis has a really simple schedule, Wake up, be stupid, beat up a random kid, go to sleep. In all honesty Francis isn't interesting except he's got his parents convinced he is the sweet His Parents however that's where the fun is. Francis' Father, Jeremy, works at the lumber mill as a log keep. Jeremy has a nasty habit of leaving the log book open and unsupervised at night. He also is constantly forgetting the combination to the mill's safe and has to write it down. Jacqueline, Francis' mother, works as a secretary for the mayor's office and is good friends with the mayor's wife. They are so close she even has a key to their house. These two people are so nice it's nauseating.
