You're sitting on a simple wooden chair in the wooden house you call home. Since your parents died, you inherited the house and a small but comfortable amount of money. Being interested in a life of adventure, you have decided to make a living in the daring and dangerous business of treasure hunting. Through collecting and comparing the stories and rumours of travellers and voyaging tradesmen, you have made a visually crude map detailing the nearby lands which drain into the two rivers, the Perch River, that flows through them to the Carp's Mouth bay. This map is now laid on your table as you examine it. Where are you on this again?

The people of your area are mostly simple fisherfolk who rely on fishing the water to provide themselves and their families with food. Thus, most of the names around here have simple names that reflect that lifestyle, this lakes being known as Sturgeon Lake for obvious reasons.

You and your parents were also fisherfolk, plying the large lake's freshwater for fish - mostly trout - and shellfish. Your house is relatively isolated, being on the shore of the lake about fifteen miles away from the nearest village. However, you have a fishing boat which is easily capable of sailing there in only a couple of hours with good wind. You are up early in the morning; judging by the sky, it has been about an hour since dawn.

I'm going to try running on write-ins only to begin with. Tell me if you would like some prompts.

You drink a glass of beer and walk outside your house through the front door, onto a rectangular jetty where your boat is moored. The weather is sunny but cold, not unusual for a spring day like today. Your boat is a wooden thirty-footer which you regularly maintain and check for any problems; you rig its sails and sail west through the lake. The wind is favourable to you and you make good time, arriving at the lower Grain River in less than two hours. As the name suggests, large stretches of the banks of the Grain River are occupied by fields of grain. This, you muse, is probably because the land around this area is relatively flat. Sailing through a stretch of less cultivated plain, you notice a deer standing near the bank. The wind stays strong for the rest of the journey and you navigate your way down the river to the coast. Now you are on the sea, you remember a story you heard from a travelling merchant, at the lake trying to sell coral and other goods from the ocean, about an unusual item which had been shown to him by a fisherman living on the sea coast: a white marble statue of a swordfish which he claimed had washed up on the shore.

Time for some investigation to track down that statue! You assume that the statue isn't still lying on the beach unclaimed, so that leaves you with the more subtle option: to ask around the community and follow the rumours to the statue.

As Sturgeon Lake is fairly rich, you have little need to go to the ocean and you are unfamiliar with the settlements on its coast; but you do remember a seaside pub which you used to visit on the occasional times you ventured to this area. On the other hand, a more direct approach might be to find the docks and approach the usual collection of old ex-fishermen which you expect will have gathered there.
