The whole "Ethics in Gaming" thing was a smoke screen so that when mods on websites banned people for witch hunting, it instead looked like some kind of censorship conspiracy.
GamerGate was literally run by ACTUAL Neonazis from /pol/, originally titled "The Quinn". And all of the people who wanted reform for video game journalism so that nobody would ever give a good score to a game like Gone Home or Depression Quest and instead they could go on feeling like TittyRapeFuck Simulator 5000 was a good game that feminists love, all of these people were just fine and dandy with "The enemy of my enemy is my friend" no matter who that friend was. That friend, by the way, was the people who started the movement. They were the people who, from the ground up, created and supported it. Sure, the group that wanted games reform (and by games reform, we mean video games to STAY EXACTLY THE SAME and not have any reform at all but to keep outsiders (women, minorities) out) just went ahead and ignored when their fellow gamergators are doing the whole rape and death threat thing.
And it got better. Group A, the first group, that just wants to hurt non-white, non-males, is able to hide behind the second group, claiming they're just an ethics reform movement while Group B responds to anybody showing them the logical inconsistencies of their argument by saying, "YOU'RE JUST NOT RESPECTING ME BECAUSE YOU THINK I'M LIKE THOSE FAKE GAMERGATE MEMBERS WHO HARASS WOMEN AND NIGGERS! I'M NOT LIKE THEM!" and shriek for an hour until the inevitably get banned from whatever website.

Nintendo JUST put a "Five Fun Guys" "Shufflegate" reference in their newest Paper Mario game. /pol/ intentionally set up the Five Guys Burgers and Fries thing to more closely resembel Watergate's five men who were arrested under Nixon thing to make "GamerGate" sound more appealing.
Anyway, Nintendo may or may not have made a reference to Watergate and not GamerGate and nobody knows for sure whether or not their insistence that it was a Watergate reference is PR or not. (As this would not be the first videogame to reference GamerGate and Nintendo tends to reference either current events, millenia old mythology, or their own Videogames) but what we DO know, is that THOUSANDS of people came out of the woodwork to inform Zoe Quinn that she isn't important enough for Nintendo to be specifically taking a stab at her.
