Well, in the west, it's associated with reddit.
Because anything that isn't perfect like their ideal 2D world is a reminder of the imperfect 3D world which they reside in. In a perfect /a/, everybody is a perfect poster who never leaves home literally & virtually, and shows absolutely no signs of outsideness in all nuances.
It's also a way for newfags to conform, through restraining authority. This reflects their internal burning desire to have control over people which they lack in their life, further manifested with their obsession with wanting to collect dolls. Now, I'm not saying everyone is this way, but there's a clear pattern with how distinctive the whole /a/ atmosphere is compared to the rest when it comes to their strict control in posting etiquette and stringent rules regarding the flexibility of discussion and content. This is a collective mindset culminated by the identical life experiences they share and indoctrinated by the punctilious Japanese mentality heavily influenced through the consumption of anime/manga.
If you are not part of this larger order of things, the posters will wish upon you to actually follow through with killing yourself—an auxiliary mentality led to advocate the subtle yet effective Japanese form of eugenics. This is why suicide rates are high over there, yet overall civilization and order is seemingly superior.
It is not simply a pedantic trivial matter for these people. It is intelligence at practice.
