Generally most of the new memes stay here on 4chan.
This threads existence answers its own question.
The reason 4chan used to be so fun and create a lot of humor is because people could get away with tons of stuff here that they couldn't elsewhere.
Some people complain that posters here aren't "accountable" for what they make, yet that's exactly what made 4chan what it was. You could try things without feeling embarrassed or worrying about consequences.
So what changed you ask? People started looking at "memes" as something important. Almost as a commodity like the OP basically implies.
Suddenly everything became: "lol you didn't use this MEME right you must be a newfag","that joke isn't as high quality as my collection of MEMES here therefore your attempt at humor falls short", etc..
But that itself isn't enough to ruin what we had. What ruined it is the mods decided to enforce "culture".
Shit that would have been laughed at years ago is now deleted as "shitposting" while posts that are essentially of the exact same quality are allowed to exist if they are old established memes.
TL;DR It's directly the mods fault. But their behavior is ultimately a result of people putting "memes" on a pedestal.
