Was 4chan really bigger than it is now? I've heard a lot of things about 4chan, but when I started posting here a few years ago it felt like the website didn't live up to its reputation and imfamy. There's no way that 4chan was bigger than Reddit, right?

Consider that Reddit prior to 2009 was a ghost town. Digg used to be what Reddit is now, complete with all the painful meme appropriation and justice warrior cancer, but lumped into one giant 'board' and not split into subreddits... And then one day they pissed off the userbase by rigging their front page to show paid content stories first. That's what set off what became known as The Great Digg Migration.
People like moot and snacks and shii all joined reddit in 2006. Back then reddit didn't have subreddits either and was used for different things by different people than it is now.

4chan has nowadays like 190k users.
Back in 2008, it had about 25k.
In 2006, about 6k-10k, I don't recall it.
