Reaction pics are cancer, a crutch for communication, and 99% of the time they're off-topic anyway.
>>532063
I remember in the old days where reaction images weren't really a thing.
I often see them used by autists to reinforce the emotion in their post. It's like they don't think they will be understood unless they use a reaction image.

>I remember in the old days where reaction images weren't really a thing.
Remember when greentexting wasn't a thing either? Good days.
>>532066
but it makes things so much more interesting.
The OC that comes from Reaction Images is pretty fucking great desu.
>>532066
Often times, in a thread with more than 0 replies, the only replies that will be read will be the ones with 30 backlinks OR the ones with images. I'm sorry, but removing (You) might do something about this.

>I often see them used by autists to reinforce the emotion in their post.
As a real diagnosed autist, I can confirm that they can help, but only in addition to a genuine attempt at communication.
If a reply is JUST a picture of someone's face with no text, it could mean four or five distinct emotions for all I know, and le ebin maymay images such as >>532064 and >>532069 have been misused so much they have lost all meaning.
A crutch is not inherently harmful. If you take a crutch away from someone who's really injured, they'll take longer to recover and be in pain the whole time. The problem is people who don't even attempt to walk, and only use their crutch as a club.
This thread is shit.

>old days
>reaction images werent a thing
Fuck man did you start out using telnet?
Because 4chan has had reaction images since the beginning.
>>532901
The peak of popularity for image macros was a time before social media dominated when Myspace and Facebook were still new and digg hadn't yet given birth to reddit.
That said, you can still see new image macros on twitter and tumblr and facebook today, although the aren't quite as 'memetic' as they used to be. There is a fine line between meme and cliche, and time always skews image macros toward the latter. Social media seems to accelerate this cycle.
>>532912
Not really. Even the term "reaction image" is fairly recent.
>>532912
Reaction pics started in like 2007, and the term was coined in 2008 I think. Before that it was image macros or simply discussion without using crutches.
>>532956
I'm not sure but I think it might be even later than that. Maybe around 2010.
>>532956
>image macros cant be reaction pics
I dont care what we called them, the concept was the same.
>Reaction pics are a crutch for communication
Another case of the foot-draggers re-defining the world because of the shitheads that ruin things for everyone.
4chan has imageboards. It's not unreasonable to post some goddamn images every once in a while, and for several reasons. One of those reasons is to provide a visual context to your posts, since there's information that works better as an image as opposed to text. They can work together and complement each other you asshole. But oh no, there's a group of losers that are image spamming and samefagging hundreds of reactions for epic screencaps, so let's stigmatize the entire feature.
Here's an example, it's a nice compact way to express how I feel from reading stupid shit like this on this board. I'm communicating through both text and image so you get a double dose of me calling you a faggot.
>>533025
Your mom is cringe
>>533935
You are that exact autist you faggot
>>533953
No, I'm cooler than you in every way possible
>>533953

>>533935
How do you feel about emoticons?
Remember that you can't hate them if you love reaction images. Thery're basically the same thing.
