The name is a relic from an old forgotten age of the internet. Back then all we had were gifs!
In order to meet the filesize requirements we used to have to piece our animations together frame by frame, and use various optimization techniques, in the snow!

So then, why has .webm taken off, but animated PNGs never did?
hey while we're asking dumb questions is there any way to make webms show thumbnail previews in windows explorer because this limitation is making it hard to organize and utilize these shits on 4chan and i'm too lazy to give them all cheeky filenames

Firefox, Chrome, IE, etc all support webm but don't support APNG universally.
