What intrinsic advantage does one get from making a visual novel instead of an actual novel? It incentivizes lazy writing because you don't have to write the detail of the visuals/sound, you can just add it. You don't get the direction or interactivity of film/vidya either.

VNs can take the storytelling risks that anime can not take, while having a higher production value than manga and offering voice acting, colors, etc. Even if you don't see them as being as strong as legitimate novels (understandably, as there are very few VN writers with such talent and most of them are either untranslated or translated poorly), you have to admit that they are a pretty nice middle ground between manga and anime if you want an "anime" experience.
