Listen I'd love a serious film discussion board but first of all good luck moderating that, once people on here are told something is serious discussion only they will do everything in their power to make sure it is anything but, and two if you make /film/ you'll just have to make films in one board and television in another. Creating containment boards for Star Wars and Capeshit (which should probably house all massive franchises, like Jurassic World or Harry Potter, as those aren't really for film fans they're for casuals who would flood the board with shit discussion) makes sense since those two topics make /tv/ borderline unusable at times and there is certainly enough discussion to sustain boards for them. I guarantee those boards would have more activity than /mlp/ and /asp/ considering they're each bigger than My Little Pony and WWE.

I'd love a Sci-Fi board but I think the problem is it crosses too many mediums. Though many of us Sci-Fi fans are united by the genre, not any particular love for film or books. It also raises the problem of: do you force all sci-fi to go to that board? And there's plenty of 'soft' sci-fi (as in very light elements of sci-fi, not hand-waved science) out there too that could be difficult to say where it belongs.

I think a tv/movie split is merited, only problem is that 4chan may simple not have enough mods to make sure the split happens smoothly (i.e. deleting movie threads from /tv/). Splitting a really big, spam infested board like that is going to be hard. It's not like you're making a containment board for one dedicated fanbase like /mlp/, you are splitting the community in half.
And for a while you're going to still have people going to /tv/ by default to talk about movies just because they simply aren't aware that /film/ was created or are too lazy to move. Maybe nuking /tv/ and starting over with 2 new boards (/tele/ and /film/ if they're going to have lame 4 letter board names) could work to break up that element of inertia. Wipe the slate clean and any claims of 'board culture'

Anime generals is a dumb idea. There are maybe a dozen-ish actual generals on /a/. That's just not enough to fill a board, which would need 150 threads. Constant threads about currently-airing seasonal shows aren't "generals" either unless they keep on going after the show ended.
Retro anime is a neither smart nor dumb idea, just kind of pointless. It's not hard to talk about an old show on /a/ if you know how to start a thread, the thing is those threads tend to die fast because if like 4 people are willing to talk about it period then it's just natural. An /ar/ would be the same with not much conversation only with very prolonged thread death. It's pointless because actually if you are talking about a show only a handful of people will want to discuss with you, if half that handful is on the regular /a/ because they normally are more interested in currently-airing shows and will merely stop by your thread if they happened to see it, things would be even more slow on an /ar/.
