How do we save /v/? There are so many things wrong with that board that it might as well be /b/ 2.0

Go back in time and stop GamerGate.

Belligerent and vociferous. They are shit. They are worse than /b/. Put a wall around them. You can smell them on other boards.

>>
>>505860
The bigger a board is, the dumber it is (more people fall for bait, more people asking dumb questions, quicker comments are encouraged, etc.)

Mods need to either split it (and I mean actually delete /v/ and make new vidya boards, not a /vr/-style splinter), or nuke the board hard for about 2 months solid. Monitor threads inside and out and delete off-topic posts. Target those stealth threads with obvious bait op images. Hell, throw in ROBOT9000 and thread IDs if it'll help. I think /v/ is willing to try anything short of deleting the board at this point.
>>
>>505860
/v/ is a byproduct of a shitty industry. Once video games become good again /v/ will be good again.
>>
>>505898
>I think /v/ is willing to try anything short of deleting the board at this point.
Completely wrong, /v/ would scream and yell and throw temper tantrums about ANY of the things you listed. But most of /v/ is either underaged or repeat shitposters or both, so it really doesn't matter what they think.

>>505909
Games being genuinely good would invite more shitposting, because you'd be able to bait more people by saying said games are in fact shit. /v/ represents the gaming community as a whole; cancerous, reactionary, and hooked on instant gratification.
>>
>>505921
>/v/ represents the gaming community as a whole; cancerous, reactionary, and hooked on instant gratification.
This guy gets it.

Think of the kinds of people who would be interested in any board's subject. Those are the people you're talking to on that board.
>>
>>505921
>/v/ represents the gaming community as a whole; cancerous, reactionary, and hooked on instant gratification.

Well whining about it isn't going to change anything, why don't you just stop going to /v/ if you hate it so much? Or better yet just stop playing video games since all gamers are shit.

Thank you Mr. Anonymous, your complaint will be filed alongside the mountain of other complaints of "/b/ 2.0" from 2007 onwards. I'm sure someone will get to it eventually.

Fuck off, no one on this site represents shit. /v/ is for games, not gamers, just like /ck/ is for food, not foodies. No one invited these posing tards, the industry invited them and they brought their stupid "gaming community" shit here like they own the place.

The real problem with /v/ is that it has too many people saying too much stupid shit for easy replies, and don't even act like it's the only board that has that problem. The shit would go away quicker if you stop allowing these fags to justify it under the mantra of board culture.

Make /v/ only for games not yet released that were released in the past 2-3 months. Add """"""""""""""""culture"""""""""""""""", console wars and letsplays.
Make /gv/ - Good Videogames (or good /v/).
Or get a moderation team that is not out to breed as cancerous as possible and use way more wordfilters.
Every solution is an aircastle because /v/ got that bad.

I didn't want to fisk, but I might have to fisk for this one.

>Fuck off, no one on this site represents shit.
Would you have preferred I said that it's analogous to gaming as a whole?

>and don't even act like it's the only board that has that problem.
Nobody said it wasn't.

>The shit would go away quicker if you stop allowing these fags to justify it under the mantra of board culture.
Nobody's "allowing" it, it's just that none of us actually have the power to NOT allow it. The only thing that would be able to make a difference there would be to amend the rules for /v/ by removing the "video game culture" aspect of what's allowed, leaving only video games themselves.

Of course, it feels like the debate right now isn't over "What can we do to fix /v/," but "Is /v/ bad, and what's wrong with it;" to which the answers tend to be yes, and a joint effort between unbannable shitposters and idiots who can't help replying to them. So we should really be focusing on the first question.
>>
>>505860
Significantly increase posting timers. Two, three, possibly even four minutes at the start.

This gives the mods and jans more time to clean up trash. People will more often (but not always) think longer about what they want to post instead of just firing off a shitpost every minute.

As it is right now the board is so fast that there's no way the staff can keep up.
>>
>>506062
>/v/ is for games, not gamers
I know that much, but the people who normally play games are the ones that will go to /v/ most often. Now think about the age group video games attract. Think about how they usually act. Think of the kinds of people who would be interested in any board's subject. Those are the people you're talking to on that board.

If you're interested in something, you're going to go to a board that covers that interest. Who plays video games?
>>
>how do we delete a board so far up it's own ass it won't even discuss the subject matter it's about with out calling others shills.

the answer is simple delete /v/ and make a rule that no one can discuss vidya
>>
>>507247
You're not debating anything by dissecting the convenient parts of my post that you can easily reply to, and you didn't even add anything at that. Engage the central point or fuck off.

And the central point, in case you missed it, is this: No one who posts on this site represents anyone but themselves. The site is faceless and polymorphic, which by itself prevents its own community. That's the entire point of being on a goddamn anonymous site, and why a good chunk of us came here in the first place. You would call the next Anon a moron for saying "I speak on behalf of X," and rightfully so, so it's just as moronic to then look at that person and say "they represent X." You and everyone else who complain about saving or removing /v/ as though it were a single entity are insisting on burning down an entire forest because of some nasty weeds.

If any of you witnessed all the shit that happened during dubs spam and still think that there's some clear-cut solution to get people to straighten up, then you're just stupid. You already understand that all of /v/'s problems are from individuals, not a community, so you should already understand that any debating on how to fix or save /v/ is pointless.

The solution is what it's always been; insult and ban the faggots who treat things as their trash bin, as well as the faggots designating it as such. That's all that can and needs to be done. If it doesn't work, then let it serve as proof that when people are given freedom, all they ever do with it is shove it up their own ass.

Wow everyone, thanks for your incredibly original thoughts and comments that show you understand nothing about how fast, popular boards work!

Q&A is pathetic. If you don't like it don't read it.

Don't try to delete it. Sheesh. Go elsewhere.

Almost as pathetic as the people who call for /pol/'s deletion with no concept of the consequences (and loss of traffic).
>>
>>507393
/v/ is better than it's been in years.

Remember /v/ - Pizza? The amount of shitposting on /v/ has actually dropped in the past few years.

>The solution is what it's always been; insult and ban the faggots who treat things as their trash bin, as well as the faggots designating it as such. That's all that can and needs to be done. Seeing as nobody likes "the faggots who treat things as their trash bin" and already insult them on a fairly regular basis, and the mods also ban them on a regular basis- seeing as how none of that seems to helping in the slightest- then I guess there's your proof. By your own admission, there's nothing that can be done.
>>
>>507393
>The solution is what it's always been; insult and ban the faggots who treat things as their trash bin, as well as the faggots designating it as such. That's all that can and needs to be done.
Insulting people just bumps the thread and encourages the shitposter.
The solution SHOULD be to ignore the faggots, but /v/ is one of the easiest boards to bait. /v/'s userbase is simply too large, plus they've been taught that the response to a shitposter is to reply with "gr8 b8 m8" or "Here's your (You)", as if that does anything but bump the thread and give the shitposter validation and visibility.
If /v/ needs anything it's smarter, more seasoned users who understand how to ignore and report. I feel like /v/ could honestly use a sticky telling people to do just that, combined with moderator action against people who reply to shitposters with the usual canned responses.

The board has been exceptionally bad over the past 12 months or so. I don't even think it's GG, it's the fact moderation took a dive when it happened.

Make a board for Japanese games

The 2 biggest complaints I have about /v/ are baiting and /pol/itics. "Baiting" isn't trolling. "Baiting" isn't clever, funny, interesting, subtle, or smart. I can smash my face into a keyboard, fill in the captcha, click "post," and say "Yes I EBUN baited you!" Any moron can do it, and they think they are smart for acting like a complete piece of shit. /pol/itics, like GG, Bernie threads, misuse of the word "cuckold," all that shit needs to go. I barely post on /v/ anymore, but I always try to answer questions and be respectful, but as someone said above, /v/ is the 2nd most active board, filled with the most underage and/or assholes.
>>
>>507919
I'd take /pol/tards infesting the board over this new, low effort baiting that seems to plague /v/ these days. It's almost offensive how retarded those posters are. Either that or they're underage.
>>
>>507919
>Baiting
Just trolling with a different name. Only difference is that now there's more people who never learned how to ignore trolls.
>>
Put the following on a spam filter
>Reddit
>Tumblr

Install moderators who actually do their jobs. A large part of /v/'s decline was the fact moderators art just Nintendo fanboys deleting whatever hurts their feelings while letting LOL and e-celeb threads go to 400+ posts.
>>
>>507944
>the fact moderators art just Nintendo
This isn't true and this myth is partially why the fanwars shit keeps on.
>>
>>507939
Baiting is not trolling. Saying something purely asinine and without any thought just to rile up others is not trolling. Trolling is art, baiting is not.

GG was just a symptom of the illness. After it got banned there were a few months of thinks looking up but then it nosedived again. I guess the most rampant 8gaggers got bored over at their redditclone and came back to shitpost fulltime again.
>>
>>507944
Anti nintendo stuff gets moderated because nintendo fans on /v/ care for videogames and want to talk about it in peace. They use the report function like it should be instead of whenever someone "shills" a game you don't like or told you to go back to /pol/ and /b/.
>>
>>507904
>Make a board for Japanese games
Unnecessary. The problem is the East vs West shitposting, not Eastern or Western game discussion. If the boards were separate people would just hop the border to make troll threads anyway.
>Make a board for new media and internet culutre (e-celebs, youtube, twitter, podcasts)
This I can see working. Hell, expand it to include celebrities of all kinds to help clean up /tv/ celebrity gossip and give kpop culture a more permanent home while we're at it.

Pretty much this. /v/ is made a shitty place by dedicated shitposters and hyperactive children. Reduce the amount damage one person can do to a thread/the board, encourage slower more thoughtful discussion, and make the board slower so it can be more easily moderated. To these ends, increase the post timer, and I'd suggest to five minutes.
>>
>>510361
but nigga, phone posters on android or people using an android emulator can bypass that timer.

>>
>>510364
How is that? Phone posters are still subject to the one minute timer aren't they? As I understand it the timer is linked to browsers and not IPs. Or is there something about android phones that gets around that (I wouldn't know, I'm not a phone poster).
>>
>>510365

>>

Clover(android 4chan app)+infinite amount of IPs on a phone gets around it.
>>
>>510372
That's regrettable however I don't think it would be much more an issue than it is now. Just a small number of users using Android devices or emulators to shitpost can be maintained, it's not as if it was ever going to completely remove shitposting to begin with. Rather, saying that it doesn't fix X because it doesn't fix Y makes no sense.
>>
>>510373
word, just saying that dedicated shitposters will always find a way around it, and kids will always reply to shitposting/b8 threads.
/v/'s kinda doomed since it's too fast
>>
>>507268
>Significantly increase posting timers. Two, three, possibly even four minutes at the start.
>This gives the mods and jans more time to clean up trash. People will more often (but not always) think longer about what they want to post instead of just firing off a shitpost every minute.

High post timers do curb spammy one-word bumps, but very high post timers could actually hurt legitimate discussion too. Since smaller numbers of people can't post fast enough to keep their threads bumped, the only threads that DO stay bumped are the shitposting threads with bait OPs. So say goodbye to any comfy, low-population threads about niche games.

I think /v/'s post timers are good where they are. I'd say make it 2 minutes TOPS. Or maybe do a dynamic system, where threads with more IPs get longer timers?
>>
>>510374
>kids will always reply to shitposting/b8 threads.
This is the real problem. /v/'s userbase is way too willing to go off-topic. All it takes is one feminist webcomic or sexy webm dropped into a thread and people immediately would rather talk about that than the original thread.

What the mods should be doing is banning the literal children that reply to that garbage. They don't know how to ban evade like the shitposters do, and they're arguably more of a problem than the shitposters. Unlike the shitposters who have no regard for the rules, they might actually learn their lesson and stop going off-topic.
