>4chan should be a serious site for serious discussion and any sort of creativity or fun posting should be shitposted if not outright banned

When did this happen? I see this sentiment echoed more and more with each passing day. It's not that I think we should be a free for all - I'm glad illegal content has mostly been eradicated but I don't understand the frame of mind of a person that thinks "hey, I want a super serious, logical, and civil discussion - what website should I go to? Oh, 4chan of course!" I mean, it's 4chan - not a forum for a professional organization or scientific journal.

>when did this happen

Site wide? 2012 during the great mod crackdown. It even happened on boards where the users were fine with funposting - like /sp/.

I personally just ignore threads I don't like but it is annoying when you make a legit thread and some fucker derails it with generic shit.

Hello there friend. I see you have a complaint about 4Chan. While 4Chan is a large social image board, we simply cannot cater to the individual tastes of every single user of the site. If this upsets you, please get up from your computer, take a deep breath, and go for a walk. Maybe that will clear your head.
Thank you for visiting 4Chan!

Shitposting isn't funny or enjoyable anymore to anybody except the person doing the shitposting. On most boards it's all the same shit, you already know which threads are going to be made, you already know what all the replies to those threads are going to be. It's fucking boring. You try to voice a complaint about it, you get called "reddit" by someone who probably wasn't even born until after Reddit was founded.

Maybe 4chan doesn't need to be a serious site for serious discussion, but I'd much rather it be that than what it is now, an echo chamber of mindless repetitive bullshit.

>mods banning people for having general conversations during half time and long commercial breaks

This always bugged me. I'm not going to get up and stay away from my computer for 20-30 minutes for half time to end.
>>
>>480849

I agree for the most part. The only thing is that I believe overzealous application of the rules (amongst other causes) is what killed creativity and originality here. On topic threads, at least on the boards I frequent, and basically the same handful of topics repeated over and over again along with breaking news related to the board topic.

Not that that's bad - it should be the majority of content on a board but to me there seems to be few "fun" threads anymore.

4chan hasn't been creative for the most part since 2007, when all the braindead American teenagers who were raised on medication and adults telling them they were perfect, came flooding into the site.

The current situation is that the rules are NOT routinely enforced and mods have allowed the mainstream boards which these spergs have taken over, to become ruled by a hivemind wherein mods are more likely to ban someone who disrupts this hivemind as opposed to the shitposting autists kneejerking to something outside of their hivemind, like pavlovian dogs.

Case in point: how the current /a/ hivemind responds to something not currently integrated as an acceptable general or shitposting template thread:

>but it is annoying when you make a legit thread and some fucker derails it with generic shit.
That's because all they know are the ingrain routine threads and routine posting associated with them to the point that they may as well be templates for real discussion. When the hive noticed your thread, it saw an opportunity to swarm it and inject that routine. Creative and organic discussion is dead outside of extremely unpopulated boards, in which they may as well be dead.

Wow. Now that I think about it, a lot of thread OP's and discussions in those threads all follow a very similar format with little variation.

Damn, it's almost like we're living in a computer program repeating simulation after simulation with only a few variables changing.

When generals were allowed in.

>Wow. Now that I think about it, a lot of thread OP's and discussions in those threads all follow a very similar format with little variation.
I've been saying it for years and without fail every time I bring it up in a thread in it actively happening, people kneejerk and start sperging out.
/a/ is probably the most arrogant board in this regard, and insecure in that they will never ever admit to what they are doing.

Anecdotally, a few days ago I basically flooded the catalogue with threads from the archive, using the same images and same OPs. Barely any of these threads died early and all of them attracted the exact same shitposting which was present in the archived thread. It has become so routine and predictable and yet somehow so many posters are unaware of it- or they are aware of it and they are using it as a form of safe space to socialise.
Socialise might be a weird way to put it but when you get the same groups of people in the same threads which seem to recycle themselves forever, even if you're arguing with these same people over and over again, telling each other to leave the board, yadda yadda yadda, it's still a form of human interaction at some level.

>>480862
They weren't allowed so much as mods were lazy and gave up trying to remove them. Those mods for the most part left and newfags replaced them who had little experience with the site and imageboards in general, who came into the modern state of 4chan and just assumed this was how an anonymous ephemeral imageboard operates: like a chatlobby full of arseholes who keep making the same themed chatrooms and spent a large amount of time trying to grandstand each other while posting images of cute but smug 2D girls. It's hard to blame the mods; none of them should have been put in such a place when it's clear they aren't remotely qualified. It's like letting a retard drive a train and blaming him when the whole thing ends up smashing into a bridge somewhere.
>>
>>480858
Jesus, mods just locked the RWBY manga thread on linked on /a/. They deleted all the posts, allowing the previous shitposters to start back up, then someone had the nerve to tell the OP to fuck off and only make threads when a new chapter is out, then mods promptly locked it.

This flies in the face that series like ゆゆ式 and ゆるゆり had threads, daily, for months on end without new content or without people discussing the manga series at all. The mods are seriously fucking retarded and they are actively killing the site by defending the /a/ hivemind, because it ends up leaking out to the rest of the site, this pernicious attitude of scream loud enough and anything you don't like, regardless of whether or not it is on-topic or not, gets banned.

It's just disappointing.

Fuck off back to r.eddit.
Typical r.edditor-attitude, "4chan is for shitposting, r.eddit is for serious dicussions".

Alright, lemme lay it down for you:
All this "board culture" and "elitism" stems from newfags claiming you're a newfag for very random reasons (ellipses, exclamation points, certain greentexts) just to look cool or change the topic of an argument. Sometimes these claims of newfaggotry pick up steam and develops into a board wide thing. The problem is all of these culture rules have piled on top of each other and have made the place a completely hostile and srs bzns. As long as we have a majority of newfriends pretending to be oldfriends, this will always happen.
>>
>>480872
OP had two hours to find a single kindred spirit who wanted to talk about the manga and failed.

Assuming that was ever his intention to begin with, rather than making it in the full knowledge that it was going to be shit so that he could use it as an example of how garbage /a/ is.
>>
>>480858
And this is pretty much all correct too. I don't like RWBY, I don't like a lot of things, but this whole mentality of "spam and shitpost everything I don't like endlessly" is the exact kind of thing that destroyed the fun on /a/.
>>
4chan is run more by its users than you think.
Janis and mods exist more as a function of the report button rather than as an omnipresent force. They can ban users and delete posts, but the staff can't bring in good users or make shitposters good posters.
>>
Where did you read this?
There's a big difference between funposting/OC and a nigger derailing a thread with pics of cucumbers.

>illegal content has mostly been eradicated
But 4chan never hosted anything illegal besides CP and bomb/death threats, and these things are still out here.
>>
>>480840
I'm not saying 4chan should only be for serious discussion but I think if you're having a serious discussion and it gets derailed by shitposting you have a certain right to be upset.

Maybe you just can't accept the fact the userbase changed and want to blame the mods for not banning everyone new.

I'm happy with equal amounts of serious and non-serious posting, as long as it's ON TOPIC.

This is what killed /mu/. People getting away with waifu generals as long as the people they're talking about are musicians. TALKING ABOUT WANTING TO FUCK A MUSICIAN IS NOT DISCUSSING MUSIC.

Mods need to realize that just because something seems technically on topic, that doesn't mean it shouldn't get deleted like the cancer it is.
