I will never understand how everyone would that awkward to use and tiny symbols startmenu over the new one introduced in windows 8. It allows for so much better customisation and faster access to what you want.

I think your concerns are entirely valid, but honestly hardly ever use my start menu in the first place, which is why I moved it to my second monitor, which is stuck on 1024x768 resolution.
