This problem is really the fault of /r9k/'s userbase more than the board itself. Does it say, or did it ever say, in /r9k/'s official rulings that it's the pepe and >tfw no gf board? Did it ever say in the official rulings, "no girls allowed", or "you must be a bitter, broken person to participate"?
Somehow, the board turned itself into that on its own. In being a red non-topic board, no one can say you can't discuss something there or that the board community must or mustn't lean certain ways. Literally all that shit that we think of when we think of r9k is its board culture. Mods intervene in board culture if it leans too off-topic (happened with /v/ and /sp/ for example), but because r9k has no topic, there is no point to step in - this is what let it become the way it is, but also won't at all stop it from eventually changing into something else however the winds blow, because there are no official grounds to either persecute or protect what's going on there.
If they as a board are so completely and entirely triggered to derailing any thread just by someone saying "btw I'm a gril", then that's the users' fault for biting such effortless bait. If they can't immunize themselves to common shitposting, and again mods won't help them like they could on topical boards because it's all fair game, then they'll have to grow thicker skin.
