Shitposting is making bad/low quality/off-topic posts, and acting like an idiot in general. It may or may not be intentional, but it's usually intentional. It can sometimes be difficult to know if you should consider a post as shitposting (or even reported) or not unless it's an extreme example.

Trolling is trying to make a post solely for replies of any kind. It doesn't matter if you believe what you post or not, your intent is to get as many replies as possible, usually by upsetting as many people as possible. But it can really be anything that will attract a ton of attention and it will usually disrupt a thread for the worse, and can often derail it in many cases. The replies don't have to be long, they can even just be (You)'s and you've accomplished your goal. Trolling is really easy to see if you can keep a level head. Trolling is intentionally making posts for the sole purpose of getting replies, and you don't plan on responding to any of the replies. It's a very selfish and disruptive act.

It's mostly about the intent of the text and/or image.

Do you not realize that many of those low quality threads are made specifically to gain replies? That you are in fact feeding the trolls when you give them any attention or replies at all? And even if the thread was innocently of low quality, the fact that you respond to it easily and endlessly until a 404, only turns it into another thing the trolls will use as bait. They take anything that might gain easy replies, and they will post it endlessly for those replies. They don't care about what you post in their thread, they only care that you post in the thread at all.

Don't post in bad threads, and don't feed the trolls.
