GG started out a few months beforehand with the whole Burgers and Fries thing. It wasn't all that bad, in retrospect, considering that it was mainly just a /v/ related scandal. Then September roles around, shit hits the fan. GG is going all out, otrocanal is going apeshit, /v/'s raging beyond belief, and some fag decides to go over the edge. He exploits iCloud and takes a whole bunch of pictures from celebrities personal accounts and starts uploading them, they're primarily nude pics. Immediately after, the celebs' Jew lawyers issue the site DMCA notices, moot is forced to comply or get sued. (imo, any posted content is the responsibility of the poster, not the site, but w/e, it's easier for the Jewyers to pin it on moot).
Since this debacle involved a whole bunch of Hollywood celebs, the media goes apeshit, broadcasting 4chan's name along with what happened. Unless you're literally the newest newfag to ever new, you've probably seen this before

At any rate, what you're saying makes sense. I mean, that's already part of why /r/ is an awful place 24/7. It sounds like this just took that attitude and magnified it immensely.
