I'm done with this bullshit, when the FUCK are we getting a /g/ general board?
>>
>>466221
>I'm done with this bullshit

You're not alone, Anon. Filters certainly help, but then the first page is going to be deserted most of the time, as 90% of /g/'s traffic is its shitty consumerism generals.

You can try lodging a complaint with the staff, but good luck. I get the impression that 4chan's userbase is unanimously ignored.
>>
>>466223
Apparently none of the staff like the idea.

1:00:25 PM <@_Wampa__Stompa> I still don't like the idea
_Wampa__Stompa → @ALTERNATIVE
1:03:05 PM <corgisquidman> ALTERNATIVE: May I ask why you don't like the idea?
1:04:33 PM <@ALTERNATIVE> because shoving all the bad things in one place is bad

I personally don't agree with this, but I don't think we'll get anywhere with this idea of a "/g/ general" board if none of the mods agree with it.

QUESTION:

What's the difference between a "General" thread and non-general thread? A thread that people regularly make and post in? Is it just that people use the word "General" to describe it?

What about Daily Programming Thread? Very likely a general despite not calling itself that.

DESKTOP THREAD? Its a thread people make frequently and post in, and theres almost always one up.

Here's a stretch, how about stallman threads? When was the last time you didn't see a single stallman thread on the board? Theres always one or multiple up, with frequent posts, probably by the same posters.

Here's another fun thought experiment.
https://boards.4chan.org/g/thread/53449865/
Lets take this thread for example, lets pretend this is HUGE NEWS, and people will be talking about it for weeks, even months. (Actually it will be talked about for weeks but irrelevant)

Are you saying that this thread should be shipped off to another board for discussion because people want to make another thread to continue talking about it after this thread dies?
>>
>>466230
If a thread with the same content and discussion is posted over and over again, it's a general.
>>
>>466235
So all you want is "how do I fix my computer" threads?

Except those have been made over and over again as people often have the same problem. So those should get shipped off to the other boards as well.

I didn't realize you were the only person allowed to experience new content.
>>
Generals throughout every board I post in is the same 3-16 people (usually on the smaller ends) posting the same bullshit, same jokes, same crap for months on end.

Some generals make sense, like the stupid question general on /g/, gear thread on /p/, etc.. but if you want to see how quickly generals can kill a board look at /sp/ and /int/.
>>
>>466228
>Wampa__Stompa

What a fucking cheater.
>>
>>466866
>/int/
God it hurts. There are 35 general threads right now on this board. THIRTY FIVE. Every single fucking one of them a blogposting and shitposting circlejerk that pushes off actual international discussion off page 10.
Why this cancer isn't getting banned is beyond me. It's not fucking containment, it's a magnet, on top of cluttering the board.
>>
>>466228
Well then get the mods to actually do their fucking job.

Also fuck ALTERNATIVE. All those IRC leaks show he's a massive faggot with an agenda
>>
>>466866
>posting the same bullshit, same jokes, same crap for months on end.
I can't understand how some people do it for so long. Most people have little to say about what the thread is supposedly made for, and they post mostly the same images. The worst threads (/vg/ especially) are when most people don't even seem very interested in what the thread is supposedly about, and people end up posting and bumping with the same questions and conversations out of habit and boredom. It turns into shitposting, trolling, and porn dumps in the very worst cases.
>>
Cry more OP. First you'll want /gg/. Then you'll complain that there's too many meta generals on /gg/, so you'll demand a /ggg/. And then you'll cry about double meta generals on /ggg/, so you'll cry for /gggg/ baby baby baby, /gggg/ baby baby baby
>>
>>466221
Calm the fuck down and add "/.+/" and "general" to your subject line filters. Boom, you'll never see another general thread again.
>>
>>467040
Er, sorry. I'm an idiot. You have to escape slashes, and you probably want to make it so it filters things /likethis/ but not things http://likethis/ so

\s\/.+\/|([G/g]eneral)

That'll filter any subject line with /letters/ and/or "General" or "general" in it. I don't remember if 4chan supports the case insensitive flag or not so I just made uppercase and lowercase g work. Whatever.
>>
>>467040
>>467050
Filtering is fine if you just hate seeing them, but I personally shit on generals because they're retard magnets that bring more faggots on to the board to shit up threads I actually do like to participate in and scare away other posters I'd like to discuss things with other than what brand is the best gaming video card maker.
>>
it is definitely a problem, but there is obviously no moderation or anything giving a fuck about the board so it will never change.

a general devoted to private fucking trackers should have been the first sign, and now you get fucking retards who make threads about buying stuff from china. there comes a point where something has to be done, and that point has been crossed a long fucking time ago
>>
>>467066
"Stop talking about things that I don't like," said the Tumblrina.

"No," said the 4chan user. "In fact, I'm going to post things you don't like in your favorite tags on tumblr now and punish everyone for your transgressions."
>>
>>467040
>Boom, you'll never see another general thread again.

New generals are created all the time, and their creators don't always label the threads consistently, thereby bypassing existing filters. I shouldn't be tasked with continuously having to implement new filters.
>>
>>467080
>"Stop talking about things that I don't like," said the /pol/tard
>>
>>467091
And the mods shouldn't be tasked with removing threads that users want to make that don't violate any existing rules.
>>
>>467094
>And the mods shouldn't be tasked with removing threads that users want to make that don't violate any existing rules.

I think you missed the point. OP was proposing a board split so non-generals could have a fair chance to contend for board traffic instead of being pushed off the last page. Besides generals, /g/ gets flooded with /pol/ shitposters, so there's very little room for any other form of traffic to thrive on the board.

Would you also argue that /vg/ and /vr/ never should have been split from /v/ because they are ultimately all about video games? Some boards get a little too big for their own britches. /g/ is becoming one such board.
>>
>>467098
>Would you also argue that /vg/ and /vr/ never should have been split from /v/ because they are ultimately all about video games?

No I wouldn't. In fact, I think /v/ should be split again, but not because of generals or any balkanizing reasons. Just because /v/ is too big and people want an NSFW /v/. I think /pol/ should be split and that /b/ should be split yet again (maybe a worksafe version this time). Fast boards should be split. Slow boards should be combined.
>>
>>467100
>Fast boards should be split.

Then I assume you've changed your mind and support splitting /g/ after all. The board has 20+ active generals at the moment. Filtering them results in maybe 2 or 3 non-general threads being active on the first page at any given time, if any non-general threads even appear at all.
>>
>>467080
What the fuck does that have to do with anything I said?
>>
>>467120
I don't understand the question.
>>
IMO any OP with the word "general" in the subject or text body should be an automatic autosage on boards outside /vg/. No it won't stop the problem but will at least get the message out that you are supposed to put more effort into your thread than 'yeah just talk about ____ like we always do'. That is not quality posting. That is like going to eat the same meal at the same place day after day after day, ignoring all the other options in the city. Naturally it encourages circlejerks and blogshit.
>>
>>467152
Autosaging words just encourages misspellings that also bypass filters.
>>
>>467155
Lazy excuse. The fact that the filter would exist at all says far more than inaction.

For example rural roads that aren't policed still have speed limits posted. Some people will ignore them going "well they can't stop me anyway", but others made aware that there is some official limit will obey it, or at least somewhat stay within its range.
>>
>>467152
Maybe you'd be in favor of shadowbans.
>>
>>467175
That's different and could be evaded. If you have to start typing like a retard or trying to hide your generals because you know they are not encouraged it sends a different message.

It's sort of like how /trash/ lets you know what people think of those threads by the name of the board. If a general is autosaged people can still talk in it but it has no right to just exist forever over other threads, which is what people fundamentally dislike about generals, and people trying to bump them to force them to stay alive have no effect.
>>
>>467188
But people will just call the threads something else. Rather than "General" they could call it "Central" or something. Or they could call it Gen'ral. And then Genneral. And then you'd get people bitching about how they can't talk about General Electric, or how they can't make a thread about a character with General in their name.
>>
>>467190
Well ideally mods could identify generals by whatever common indicators exist and then make the call whether or not to autosage.

For example, criteria could be
>is this thread talking about something current/recent (say 2 weeks) in its subject
>are people in this thread keeping on-topic i.e is there blogshit/circlejerking
>does the OP link back to old threads or some off-site aggregator like a wiki or pastebin

And so on.
>>
>>467198
All of this is ignoring the main issue. Generalfags like generals, and they outnumber the people who bitch about them. Face it. This is the face of 4chan.
