Only partly right. White supremacists and Stormfronters were made fun of and it wasnt't a far-roght hugbox like now (though it's slightly swinging back with the presidential elections) but racism, particularly against blacks (anti-semetism was arguably ironic) has always been mostly genuine on this site, /pol/ just took it to extremes.

Then when social media took off and their stupid shit was being posted publicly, they ran away out of fear of actually being criticized and challenged for their beliefs. They eventually made their way to Reddit and /pol/ (places that were saying these things for lulz instead of seriousness) as a safe haven where they can share their stupid ass ideas in peace and have an entire army ready to jump on anyone who even questions what they believe.

Everyone's Racist. Heck, Bernie Sanders made a racist comment in the debate yesterday, a dog-whistle comment aimed at black people, except it backfired hard. Some of Bernie's supporters made certain racial remarks because black people don't want to vote for their guy.
Right-wingers are open and honest about their feelings instead of the cognitive dissonance that liberals face every day. They're just closet racists, more likely to discriminate positively instead of negatively. They decide what's best for these people, which is motivated by a certain kind of white guilt. Affirmative action is the most hypocrite kind of policy.
Most of them ironically live in an upper-class region, so they aren't exposed to the crimes of lower class minorities as much as the people who do live in these kind of regions. Liberals like to refer to them as rednecks and racists, or they like to position them at the wrong side of history. As if the moral decline of the West is a positive evolution. It's more likely the end of America's civilization. Democrats supposedly stand up for these people. They're more likely to have had a college education. They live in an ivory tower, ignorant of the problems that working class people face.
Racism has always been a thing on 4chan. There were anons who made racist jokes and remarks, sometimes ironically, sometimes half-ironically, sometimes not. This is still the case. There aren't a lot of genuine white supremacists on /pol/. The alt-right is open for anyone who is sick and tired of this mainstream kind of political thinking. They're tired of the politicians who never cared about them. They only cared about the lobbyists. They only cared to do the things that suited themselves. You could call Donald Trump's movement a fascist movement, but it's a denigrating remark nevertheless.
