I think it all has to do with psichology.
It kinda comes down to this: some people repress negative emotions like hatred and loneliness in order to fit in the social structures they come across during their lives, which eventually helps them get along. And this could happen to anyone who's had a traumatic experience of any kind (eg: a violent childhood, rape, near death experience(s) and the like) and ultimately fails in expressing him/herself amongst his/her peers, whilst developing ideas and values contrary to those of "normal" people. By "normal" i mean people who didn't experience any shocking experiences as the ones i said above.
