Because people are using them ironically and do a bad job of it. I like people who use them normally though, I get the impression they really enjoy life and I cannot say the same for myself.
It's like they can't tell people are purposely trolling with them.

I know this feel all too well.
There's something deep within me that tells me I will never be able to use an emoticon unironically, and I hate it. I've been on the internet too long.

In short, using emoticons is pointless on an image board since you can just use a reaction image. Not to mention that it looks tacky and immature.
There's also the fact that shitposters use them, like others have said.

Shitposters also use reaction images, and are more dependent on their freshness to have any effect than emoticons. There's nothing more tacky than an SA-dated image, for example.
