More and more I've really started to appreciate the Tumblr mentality of simply blocking out toxic people. I think a lot of us there realize that it's not about ignoring criticism entirely, it's about disregarding those who could not bring a constructive word to the table if their life depended on it. In other words, a type of person who is extremely prevalent on 4chan. There are certainly people who can say something you disagree with without being a dick about it, and so you can actually have a good discussion with them. I've found a good number of people like that on Reddit. It's just that a large chunk of a lot of communities are absolutely horrible people, and said people have no self-awareness so they get confused when people don't want to deal with their toxicity and think, "Ooh, I hate those people! It's just a hugbox and nobody's allowed to disagree with them!"

I disagree. Filters are distasteful and the reason they are there is so sensitive outsiders don't have to see the usual filth on most boards. That said, you are entitled to use them if you want but it doesn't stop the people who make the comments that you're trying to filter out from making you have to filter everything out.

So.. be nicer? No, if being a dickhead keeps people away, then that is self-moderation. 4chan is a fire that tempers steel. It burns away and drives out the impurities and softened the material enough go allow it to be shaped and then hardened.
If you look at 4chan and say "i can have a nice conversation here... But more often I get called a name and that's... That's NO GOOD!" Then you are the impurities. You are the weakness. Get tougher and fight back in a way that'll work inside the side, or leave. Either become the weapon you need go make your points, or float away as the smoke and embers of this fire. You are a babby.
