Why is this happening more and more? Is it because of phonefags?

It's not happening more and more and phonefags wouldn't be doing that as in order for them to see the full size image, they need to open the full sized image. It makes no sense that a phone user would be saving the thumbnail, as they can't exactly right click an image and save the linked image from underneath it.
You're likely suffering frequency illusion.
To quote wikipedia: The illusion in which a word, a name, or other thing that has recently come to one's attention suddenly seems to appear with improbable frequency shortly afterwards (not to be confused with the recency illusion or selection bias).[40] Colloquially, this illusion is known as the Baader-Meinhof Phenomenon[41]
You can read more about selection biases here. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Selection_bias
If you're a fan of podcasts, there's a great "You Are Not So Smart" about a related concept, "Narrative Bias" here. http://youarenotsosmart.com/2014/01/07/yanss-podcast-015-i-read-an-excerpt-from-you-are-now-less-dumb/

No. This isn't a new phenomenon that I'm just noticing. I've seen people save/post thumbnails for as long as I've been on 4chan (since 2009 or so). I have definitely noticed a marked increase in it happening recently.
I'm not actually familiar with how browsing 4chan on a smartphone works. I had this idea that because of the small screen size on a phone, a thumbnail would fill a good portion of it, so the ignorant phonefag would just assume that was the full size image. If that's not the case, I guess it could also be attributed to an increase in newfags in general.

2304 x 1440 is better than my monitor. I don't know about yours.
