Is this the single worst year of 4chan's history? How could 2016 be even worse?
I feel like this site is collapsing
>>
>>396465
Every year is like that. Next year you'll think 2015 wasn't so bad.

Personally I think 2008 was the worst year in 4chan history, but I've been here since 2004 so maybe I can see too big of a picture.
>>

2015 was the worst but 2014 was the most eventful year since 2006.

What happened in 2008?
>>

"/fa/ - Fashion", "/fit/ - Health & Fitness", "/hc/ - Hardcore", "/n/ - Transportation" (Replacing /n/ - News), "/sp/ - Sports", "/toy/ - Toys", "/trv/ - Travel", "/r9k/ - Robots9000", "/jp/ - Japan/General" were all added in 2008 and /ib/ and /ip/ were merged back into /i/. That last one is still really sour for me as a person who draws dumbass pictures for you fuckers sometimes. I really miss /ib/'s culture and I REALLY miss /ip/ even though I never posted there because I wasn't good enough.

2008 was also when Hal Turner, Tom Green, My Chemical Romance fans, British News Journals shit happened.

2008 was also 4chan.js's heyday. "COPY PASTE THIS AND SAVE IT AS 4CHAN.JS, RUN IT, SHIT BRIX." which turned your computer into a botnet that spammed the same instructions to 4chan until other idiots did it.

2008 was also when moot shut down /b/ for a few days, completely destroying every other board.

I believe summer of 2008 was when Invadechan decided it'd be funny to DDoS every other chan site, 4chan included.

And finally, MY NAME IS BOXXY AND UMM UMM AND UMM UMM UMM AND UMM HI!
>>
>>396723
Hal Turner shit happened in 2006/7.
You also forgot Chanology.
>>

>>
>>396723
The problem with /ib/ is, what would we call a board for the indie masterpiece, Ib? We've got to save that name so it's available when Nishimura realizes how important it is.
>>
>>396711
4chan culture going to hell is what happened.

Back in those days it was generally agreed that /b/ the epicenter of 4chan and as such was upheld to certain standards. Problem is, /b/ wasn't fulfilling those standards since 2006. In fact /b/ was getting worse from every conceivable angle. Chanology happen, suddenly there's a bunch of people thinking 4chan, the Internet Hate Machine & HACKERS ON STEROIDS, is a force of good and brought in a lot of flames and shitposting with them. I'm not gonna get into detail, but whether it was oldfags, raidfags or newfags expecting ebin lejuun raids, disappointment was at an all time high.

On top of that, /b/ took the habit of doing interboard raids, especially when their server was down, was vexing the fuck out of hobby boards. /b/tards became a pariah in their own site, and remember they were the great majority of the population back then. Even associating with the board could made you look bad. You can thank this for board culture existing.

To make things even worse, in 2008 moot disappeared off public management (didn't make a news post until 2012) and was practically a ghost appearing at random. We later found out that year he was 20000 in debt.

It wasn't very different from the other years and in fact shit wasn't as heavy as 2014 and early 2015 (or 2009 when moot had to go to court over a /b/tard hacking sarah palin), however, it's essentially the year 4chan's spirit shattered. Things just weren't the same afterwards.
>>

Also Ferguson riots ballooning /pol/, biggest E3 for /v/ ever, and a lot of minor stuff involving daily threads and generals.

Long story short, that's when Moot stopped caring.
>>

If I've looked at archived webpages correctly, didn't /ib/ and /ip/ merge back in 2006? Or did they split again in 2007 and remerge in 2008?
>>
>>396920
I honestly don't remember the exact dates, I just know that they merged /ip/ /ib/ back into /i/ the same year they added /r9k/ because I used to treat /r9k/ like /ib/.

>>
>>397998
>Especially 'reddit hysteria' as people like you are the hysterics
It IS at an all time high. I've been on 4chan since 2007, so I remember when the Reddit hate first began. It has never been this bad before. The shitposting on /v/ I believe it what caused the Reddit hysteria to really kick it up 10 notches. People believed /v/ and /tv/ were going to shit because people from Reddit's subreddits like r/4chan and r/games were invading /v/ and /tv/, which is actually partly true.

Reddit hate is at an all time high, and now saying "Go back to Reddit" is considered the biggest form of shitposting you can do, because Redditors themselves use that back at anyone who accuses them of being from Reddit.
>>
>>398015
if you would just stop care about this reddit, then all those problems would disappear
>>
Oh 2016 could easily be worse:

>Hiro changes all the site advertisements to use the malware-serving ad site that is on the front page.

That's how it could be worse, and I could easily see it happening too.

This place has been shit since.... probably 2006/7.

BUT... I think Chanology was the straw that broke the camels back. This place isn't 4chan anymore. It's reddit shitposting.

I think this marks the turning point about as well as anything else. 4chan had always had a heavy influx of newfriends, but around this time it reached a tipping point, or a saturation level.

People forgot about the lulz, and people forgot that srs bsns was the punchline.
>>
>>398017
That would only work if the perceived differences between 4chan's and reddit's community would disappear.

That's never going to happen. You can't really force Trump and Sanders to become friends either.
>>
>>398023
This

The "Ignore it and it'll go away!" Mentality has NEVER worked. Ever.

Either two things happen:

-Someone else gives them attention, and you're ignoring it as it grows in intensity
Or
-You ignoring it is mistaken as acceptance, and everyone blissfully goes along with it because no one is speaking out against it or raising awareness about how bad it is.

EVERY YEAR we have someone like this. Someone who everyone says "Just ignore them!" Whether it's reddit, scam artists, kickstarters, SJWs.

All of it, is just a shitty excuse to say "Don't offend the people I like you'll hurt their feelings!" Either directly or indirectly.
>>
Moot became a cuck and made alot of shit boards like /lgbt/ and caved to pony terrorists. He let some mods with a weird political agenda dictate the whole site and doubled down. He then got butthurt that some people didn't like the policy and freak out because he got cucked and everybody was mocking him for it, so he took it out on /pol/ and tried to end it with forcing shitposys on there.

Him leaving was the best thing that ever happened to this site.
>>
>>398026
I find it weird, didn't the guy run 2ch for a time?

Why is he so out of the loop now?

What happened to developer-kun, is he gone or is he running things behind the scenes?
>>
>>398032
This.

I'm kinda glad Hiro doesn't really know what's going on, because if nothing else, that makes him powerless to push his agenda as hard as Moot did.

It would be nice if he talked to us a bit more.
>>
>>396465
/r/anime is that way ⇮↑⇮
>>
I remember the days when 4chan was at it's all-time high in terms of site traffic where mods would permaban everyone in a thread just because of one person would shitpost in it.

All you had to do was post a furry image and BOOM, 100+ people/everyone in the thread would get permabanned. Hell, sometimes they would mass permaban everyone in a thread just for shits and giggles.

The petty mass bannings and the fact you couldn't see 4chan when you were banned back then caused the sites traffic to plummet, then there was the rise of reddit in 2008/9 that only worsened the situation. Then moot ordered a lax on bans, allowed the site to be browsed when banned and put the mods on a tighter leash.
>>
>>398035
>powerless to push his agenda as hard as Moot did.
You're data has already been sold.
>>
>>398038
Yeah, to Google. And Moot did it way before Hiro had any say in it.

Hiro wouldn't know the first thing about selling our data at a more granular level. I doubt he'd be able to code an archive site at this point, and we'd probably welcome another archive site after Moe died.

I fucking wish we had a permanent long-term archive site.
>>
>>398035
The mods are pushing their agenda now, without Hiro even knowing about it.

I don't think that's a good thing.
>>
>>398040
It isn't.

That said, the mods can only do so much damage. They don't have all-seeing control like Moot did.
>>
>>398037
I'm going to say that was /b/ in 2007.
That was also in 2013. It was shitty.

I quit /v/ permanently after getting permabanned for posting in a 'poor' thread.

moot did the December /pol/ thing because it was funny and it also served as a way to flush out the overly sensitive shitposters that forget to have fun.
Boards getting fucked over with music or filters was nothing new, but the group that infested /pol/ (and still does sadly) saw it as an attack on free speech and some grand conspiracy against them instead of 4chan being 4chan.
I'd link his last discussion thread (which happened on /pol/) if moe wasn't dead.

How many things has 4chan stopped by ignoring it?

Nothing.

in fact it's made some things that would have been a minor shitstorm even WORSE specifically because it let it fester and rot inside of 4chan's organs instead of expelling it.

Scientology/Chanology is a perfect example. That shit should have been purged the first week it happened. By ignoring it, it basically opened floodgates that never closed.

This is the weird thing about 4chan. The users are treated like shit and are seen as a nuisance.
When this mentality finally disappears 4chan will become a truly great site.
>>
>>398064
I wholeheartedly disagree because we dislike places that treat the users well.

MLP
Fascist mods
Reddit
The rapid increase in shitposting.
SJWs gaining a foothold on the site

I would say half of this would be far less important if 4chan had fought tooth and nail when all of this started as minor shitposting.
>>
>>398072
I don't care.

You don't have control over the world. Doing things and not doing things are the same thing. You should not do things because doing things is more work. You could be spending your efforts on something that actually accomplishes something.

I am currently not ignoring you. How am I doing at silencing you? How are you doing at silencing me? If one of us stops talking to the other one, how long do you think the other one will keep replying? Bet you a shorter amount of time than if we keep talking to each other.
>>
>>398072
"Report and move on" is all that needs to be done. If there's blatant shitposting bait then report it instead of instigating some culture war shit that goes on /pol/ and not /v/ or /tv/
Since you called the mods fascists I have a feeling that ignoring bait is something alien to you, however.

Wow, this is one of the most defeatist thing I think I've ever seen posted on 4chan. That's saying something.

Why do you even post here if that's your opinion? Why even use the internet?
>>
>>398079
"Report it and move on" has never worked. With anything. Monitoring even a single high-traffic board will tell you that. Report it and move on is literally "the least you can do", because it's just a placebo to make you think something is being done.

Except, if you've posted on any high-traffic board for a significant length of time. You'd already know that it doesn't do anything. IT does absolutely nothing. If a mod is going to notice a thread, it isn't because the little buzzer is going off in his ear. The report tool has become such an abused version of the downvote on 4chan that it might as well be replaced with a little button that just makes a bell play for all the good it does.

That's why telling people to just report and move on is fallacy. It's just encouraging the behavior that results in shitty topics taking over a board. And for every person who reports and move on? There are going to be 5-6 people who don't. Who either perpetuate it or blow it up into a shitfest.

I can't imagine what site you think you're using in 2015 if you think reporting does anything.

>>398089

Yes, the problem is those 5-6 people. There's nothing you can do except try to convert them to the side of reason. Maybe it's a fool's errand but with enough effort they can become a part of the community instead of underage shitposters.
I'm not sure how often bans are handed out for participating in off-topic flame wars, but it's not often enough.
>>

Any thread you see get deleted was probably because of the Janitor's normal scans of the board. Nothing at all to do with the buzzer you call a report button.

And here we have it happening. Someone not being defeatist is immediately dogpiled on because "It's shit just report and move on it totally works guys".

Despite the fact it isn't working now when they need it the most.

Great job guys, sure proved me wrong.
>>
>>398198
We're not dogpiling on somebody for not being defeatist. We're dogpiling on a tripfag.

Well, other than that third post. That third post is what you said. The first two are different though. Hating on tripfags is a time honored tradition.
>>
>>398200
Honestly I hate tripfags too, but trying out as a tripfag was on my bucket list.
I know, I'm pathetic

/a/ in particular is full of defeatist fags who would rather preserve a general and tone police people for speaking out at other anons acting like a cunt because preserving the 'peace' is more important. That is, you're free to shitpost to your hearts content and act like a moron as long as you aren't 'aggressive' about it.
This entire site has turned into one massive hivemind segmented into various hugboxes for faggots who grew up so sheltered in their little snowflake universe that they don't give a shit about reason or truth. They can be fucked over but will lash out at those those who care about calling a spade a spade- which every community desperately needs, whether they like it or not- in order to maintain the mood. Basically treating 4chan like their private little chatroom. It's one of the most obnoxious, narcissistic and arrogant aspects of Post-Millennials who grew up in overly feminised societies which demonised male competition and intellectual competition, such as debate, and enforced that cohesion was the most admirable trait. They have no candour, they have no grace.

These are the cretins who will inherit the milk of the world, will spill it over at the first suggestion of disagreement.
The next fifty years of human society is only going to get a lot worse before it has a chance to improve. 4chan is like a microcosm of society; a hotbed for what is becoming for the norm for human interaction.

Fuck off with your shame tactics, feminist.
>>
>>398309
Shame tactics aren't unique to feminism. You're using them right now.
>>
>>398319
>You're using them right now.
No I wasn't. Shame tactics are used by feminists and feminised men with a unique and easily identified high occurrence. The are the most powerful tool for manipulation. It's like calling someone a Mexican based on the hallmarks of their English communication. Pointing out a fact isn't shaming.

Stop being so fucking facetious.
>>
>>398319
Don't like it, stop acting like it.
Rather simple.
>>
>>398322
But >>398155 was merely pointing out the fact that nobody was impressed with >>398154 and their "LMAOOOO" shrieking weaponized cringe inducing pathos. I can't believe you're defending them. Oh wait, you are them.
>>
>>398322
You don't even know what facetious means. Go look up the dictionary definition. Or are you so much of a feminist that you have to redefine words in order to make points?

It wasn't a game of jest. He was outright allowing mods to censor legitimate discussion and ban likely thousands of users for basically no reason while he caved to what?, a dozen pony shitposters that could reset a router? and the mods at the time talked about scrapping /pol/ on IRC'S. He didn't do it for the "fun" of it, he did because he was bitter and he didn't think this site would be profitable if there were any boards to the right of /lit/. How anyone can have such a twisted verison is beyond me, I was glad he was shamed wherever he went and had to have his mods ban any comments that triggered his bitch ass, if this policy would have worked it would have killed this site and we would have been slaves to the worst communist SA goons imaginable. Hiro's hands off style while trying to expand and test boards works for me while leaving a ear open for long waited requests, I even think the mods are a million times better than 2014. The only people /pol/ harbor pleased are "le /pol/ is satire meme" and shitpost on this board about how much /pol/ angers them on /qa/. This site is moving in a great direction and it is all because we dropped the cuck and his minions.
>>

>He was outright allowing mods to censor legitimate discussion and ban likely thousands of users for basically no reason
Welcome to fucking 4chan newnigger, this shit has occurred since its inception. The /pol/ type shit has occurred shit tons though out the sites history as well

>Hiro's hands off style while trying to expand and test boards works for me while leaving a ear open for long waited requests
You mean Hiro's style of being actually dead and then coming back, listening to whoever is screaming the loudest, and changing the site on whim to that persons opinion?

>This site is moving in a great direction and it is all because we dropped the cuck and his minions.
If you think the site becoming even MORE normalfag is good, please kill yourself
>>
>>398520
>Welcome to fucking 4chan newnigger, this shit has occurred since its inception. The /pol/ type shit has occurred shit tons though out the sites history as well

Name anything that was even remotely like the time his mods went rouge.

Your entire post frankly has very little substance. 4chan has been normal fag since 2008 if anything, people wanted a /his/ board for a long time, people wanted /aco/ for a long time. You know what moot made instead? /lgbt/ because of ONE /q/ thread. That made this site more normal fag than anything. You are retarded though, if you want more neckbeards per capita just fuck off to cripple kike chan or 420 blaze it
>>
>>398533
I'd rather retard neckbeards then retard meme spouting normalfags
>>
>>398536
And that's what moot did to /pol/ filled it with shitposters because they angered him. Your logic is completely backwards. Try going to double chan for a week and let me know how it goes for you.
The autism will probably kick you out in a few days.
>>
>>398540
It doesn't fucking matter how stupid or how much I hate shit like /pol/ flood or the n/a/ruto shit. The shit is fun and always will be. Stop getting fucking upset up it, the effects of it piss me off, but the shit has always been and always will be fun

>Try going to double chan for a week and let me know how it goes for you.
>trying going to the 4CHAN KILLER #1534 filled with the worst users of /pol/ /v/ and redditr
Yea, I'm quite ok, you stupid 8gagger. I've looked at it, and its fucking horrible and its users are just as stupid

The website doesn't need to become more normal, it needs to go back to being nerdy and geeky hobby shit. It needs to become more weeb again
>>
>>398544
yes, more weeb...the great weeb Flood when?
>>
You guys don't have a right to post here. The mods can ban whoever the like at any time. If you guys get upset and think "THE TYRANICAL MODS NEED TO BE STOPPED WE SHOULD DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT" then let me tell you about this website called 8gag. They felt the same way you do and you mock them for it. And I mock you for it too.

>>
>>398805

4chan passes never blocked ads on the site. What the hell are you talking about?
>>
>>398808
Yes, but the explosion of popularity is due to the embedded cuckolding fetish youtube video.
>>
>>398811
No even before that it was pretty popular, at least on /pol/.
>>
>>398811
>>398816
its popularity was what prompted moot to embed the video in the first place.
>>
>>396467
2008 on my homeboard was an endless nightmare of TF2 and the highest concentration of offtopic bullshit ever.

The only good thing to come out of that year was Madagascar.
