It's not simple which is probably why some people never get it.
Normally the anger toward tripfags would actaully have nothing to do with the tripfags themselves. It's all about what it does to conversations and _other_ people in the thread.
For example, it's impossible for a single person to circlejerk all on their own. It requires your reputation to be imprinted on other users. Someone tries to argue with you and another anon defends you in particular because you were nice to them in another thread or some crap like that. It changes things even if you don't want it to, and that's not even your fault but the fault of other anons.
It complicates things, leads to circlejerks, popularity contests, all sorts of things people end up flocking to an anonymous discussion board to get away from.
Ok, so then the question is, why do we hate the tripfags themselves then if it's not directly their fault? Well because either the tripfag understands all these negative effects they can potentially create but just doesn't give a shit and continues to use the trip for their own personal reasons, which would make them a complete douchebag. Or they don't understand what is so great about anonymous discussion in the first place, and how it's at its best when everyone is anonymous not just a fraction of the users.
Then there's also the fact that any time you try to have a rational discussion about this sort of thing tripfags always give extremely lame excuses to justify it when everyone knows that the real reason has to do with reputation and attention.
Half the time they resort to dirty tactics like switching to Anonymous to make it seem they have more support than they even do. They can become me, but I can't become them, so they have a definite advantage in any argument.
