Well 4chan doesn't work like that. 4chan started as a site for talking about anime etc. and sharing relevant images, and then expanded from there to include other topics. And it didn't expand because users made subreddits but because the site's owner made new boards. Even today 4chan has a disproportionate number of boards dedicated to otaku topics, and almost every banner you see is related to them.

Think about what these phrases mean. Telling people to lurk more expresses that there are (were?) certain standards here and that the reader will be able to fit in if they learn what those are. I didn't post once in my first year of browsing.
