Yeah, it's almost like people were having fun or something instead of being cynical pieces of shit that hate everything and spend more time autistically sperging out over the possibility that other sites are 'infiltrating' them.

I'm glad those days are over. If you excuse me, I need to call someone a redditor and then piss myself.

I wasn't here when the screenshots you're probably talking about were taken (2003-2006 I'm guessing)
But to me that quote above isn't a bad thing, it's probably what made old 4chan so memorable for people. Memes are fucking retarded.
They were never supposed to be as serious as some people take it today. Pretending it's some form of art just leads to stagnation and less people trying things because they won't live up to your expectation.

The atmosphere looks like it was more easy going. To hell with "quality", I'm not trying to get my 4chan posts in a museum or something. I just want a place to relax and talk about stupid shit with other people like me.
Humor is better when it's raw, even if that makes it lame sometimes.
I wish we'd just stop using the word "meme" altogether and just call them "jokes" and "humor" and stop being so uptight about it all.

Old 4chan looks like it had all that, even if it might seem lame to us today it would have been more enjoyable.
>>

Emoticons were always considered a Gaia thing, totally cancerous. Even then we didn't use them. Only 'LOL' and 'LMAO' stopped being used here.

But hey, you wouldn't understand. You sound like a guy who got Internet two years ago.

>>

>a lot of people are very clearly underage
4chan was a website hacked together with stolen assets by a group of teenagers. We were under-aged back then and we still acted more mature than the hoards of spergs around today who have all but completely drained 4chan or creativity.

It was fun.
Something that would likely offend a sperg like you.
>>
>>369948
Honestly? 4chan has got way better as time went on. Even since the "golden years" of 2007-2008 it's aged really well. People are actually wittier and not just pretending to be like in the past.

Only faggots who literally treated it as a secret clubhouse complain.
>>
>>370310
This.

Even le fucking "reddit style comics" actually started on /b/.

But it's fine. Shit gets stale. People who keep rehashing the same shit are retarded.

I'd rather have less whit and less maturity if it came with less humor policing, and less people thinking they're accomplishing something in life collecting epic memes.

True. Just look at the old memes, like cockmongler. So extremely flat and boring. I mean, how many of the old memes are still actually used? They are so dead.

Pepe and feel guy will be around forever. I think these memes took off in 2009. 6 years ago and they're still used. Really shows how good the new memes are and how bad the old ones were.

Because that shit wasn't what people came here, one meme factory mentality spread people started realizing how repetitive and shitty it was by itself. Look at /tg/, there's about as much OC being made as there ever was in their 'golden age' pre-nazimod, and it's on the whole about the same level of quality(excluding modern quests) yet people will constantly dismiss it as faggotry while at the same time bitching about a lack of OC. Any board focused primarily on memes is gonna be shit.
>>
>>369948
At the time, all that shit was fresh. It wasn't till those things started to pop up on normie shit like facebook and leddit that they became taboo. It happens with pretty much every meme or phrase.

Here's shit off the top of my head 4chan loved but hates now since normies picked up on it
>rageface comics
>doge
>Pepe and Wojak are getting close
>phrases like epic win etc
>being related to Anoymous

There's probably a fuckton more. 4chan is just a bunch of hipsters really
>>
>>369948

We liked it because there was less bullshit. It's no different than before in some ways. It's not even the memes that are the problem. Those were always gay and were only meant to be a passing form of humor. Rather than lulz we have kek and lel, instead of Millhouse we have Pepe and all that.

And they were just jokes. Now we have people trading Pepe images "ironically" and going on /r/4chan specifically to look at memes and take this shit seriously. Or, alternatively, we've also got a flood of people who take shit too seriously as well. Back then it was laidback and the shoddy interface cut down shitposting. Now people either come here to form a crusade or just to shitpost.

Because imagine shitposting now. It's easy. You've got an inbuilt extension, quick reply, auto update, etc. You can shitpost as soon as the post timer is down. Back then? Click a post, scroll up to the top, type in your reply, hit enter, realize you forgot noko and try to find the thread manually because there's no catalog, and on and on. So if people were gonna troll, they were gonna troll using shit that was gonna get attention. And that often meant making a thread that'd catch interest for discussion as well otherwise nobody would take the time to post. Most wouldn't even fucking bother. Now? Quick reply "UR FGTS LEL XD" and just sit back as two dozen people quote you going "WOW BAIT HEY GUYS THIS POST IS A TROLL, BAIT BAIT BAIT BAIT BAIT BAIT HERE'S YOUR REPLY". It's more like twitch chat rather than just a lightweight imageboard for people to discuss interests. The dev did a good job with porting all this shit over to a proper code base years ago, but by god did he fuck up with making an inbuilt extension and not breaking external ones. Because the ease of use just fucking killed post quality on faster boards.
>>
>>370973
Wojack already was, but then people started using it ironically or whatever and now no one cares. Also there have always been a few boards that hated Pepe.

It sounds like it was literally slower than /news/ is now, or /po/. I wouldn't have wanted to be in a community that moved that slowly and yet still consisted primarily of shitposts. The meme history wouldn't be worth it. There are probably other chans right now that have fewer shitty posts but only get 15000 posts after a quarter of a decade, and yet nobody goes to those, despite the fact that the Internet needs them more now that >normies are >infiltrating >muh sekrit club, and the rest of the Internet is all Facebook and Twitter.

If 4chan isn't an anime site, then why are most of the banners anime related? Why is the mascot from a manga? Why are most of the ads anime related? Why are all official 4chan panels held at anime cons?
>>
>>371103
>then why are most of the banners anime related
Because only anime autists cares about making them.

>Why is the mascot from a manga
Because that's how it is and I doubt Hiro is willing to change that.

>Why are all official 4chan panels held at anime cons
These panels are not held anymore, they're a thing of the past.

>>

>Sorry, this isn't an anime site anymore.
It is, partially. There are still a bunch of anime boards, so even if anime doesn't represent the entirety of the site, it does represent a big percentage of it.
>>
>>371108
I'd argue this is a good thing though.
>>
>>371113
Eh, I don't know about good, it's better than what happened to /co/ when they tried being nice, so it worked I guess, but /a/'s elitism is slowly being eroded.

>>
>>370980
Now that Pepe and Wojak are picking up popularity on Facebook and Twitter, it's only a matter of time before posting them anywhere is on par with posting trollface or saying epic win.

But that's ok because something new will pop up, run its course and the cycle will repeat until Hiro throws the server in a microwave because he doesn't get how imageboards work

New admin, new rules. More than likely, people will want more panels to happen in the future.
>>
>>371121
Rec threads are only warned instead of being banned now, the mods are turning, and they're the ones with the most influence over our new ESL as fuck owner.
>>
>>371077
What you don't understand, because you're probably coming straight out of social media sites in which having fun is supposed to come in the form of pre-packaged little parcels of self-contained humor, often called "memes"
is that what "meme" originally meant, as a term coined by richard dawkins, is simply a unit of any kind be it humor or behavior that spreads around from person to person.

Having fun on 4chan is not supposed to be about coming up with the best image macro or reaction image and dick measuring about how far it spreads. It's about the whole interaction, which is why older memes were not as funny on the surface or to someone looking in from the outside.

If you want funny maymays that you can save to your hard drive and post around without putting much thought into it then you might want to look for a different website.
>>
>>371131

>>
>>371127

>>
>>371129
>Up until 2013, they were.
Not really. No panels between 2007 and 2013.
"4chan has held official panels at Anime USA (2005), Otakon (2005/2006/2007), and Anime Weekend Atlanta (2013). In addition, we've held a few smaller meetups at Anime Weekend Atlanta (2005 & 2006), and Anime Central (2006)."

>>371129
>New admin, new rules. More than likely, people will want more panels to happen in the future.
Get real. Hiro may be japanese, but that doesn't mean he owns a hug pillow and watches moe anime.
>>
>>371131
Rec threads are still banned, and usually don't do more than 10 posts without getting deleted.

People on /a/ learned to ignore threads that are against the rules and learned to use the report button. Other boards should take a tip.

>>371138
All anime cons? Hmm, sounds like they know their audience.

>Get real. Hiro may be japanese, but that doesn't mean he owns a hug pillow and watches moe anime.

>>
>>371143
well really, I guess I should have put it this way,
it's not about the memes at all.

Does it make you feel go to be a part of 4chan and say "we have the best memes"? What does that do for you?

If people find shit funny and everyone is enjoying it, then it's great, no matter how it might look to people 10 years later.
You say we have better memes today, fine, but look around ask yourself what percentage of our users genuinely enjoy their experiences here.
>>
>>371141
Yes, they know their audience, that's why there were no panels after 2007 when the userbase started to change drastically.
The 10th Anniversary Panel was held just for old times sake.

So he has watched Evangelion and TTGL, what's your point?
>>
>>371149
>Yes, they know their audience, that's why there were no panels after 2007 when the userbase started to change drastically.
So when all the anonymous legion posters came in, that's when the site stopped being about anime? Just because you autists ruined one board, doesn't mean the whole site changed.

>The 10th Anniversary Panel was held just for old times sake.
But if the site had 'changed dramatically' like you said, why wouldn't they hold it in a non anime venue to get more people to go? There were more people at that anime panel for 4chan, than there were for any anime 4chan panel before 2013. Sounds like you're just talking shit to try and support your terrible argument.

But now Weeb just means "Someone who doesn't look in the general direction of a Japanese television show/video game/movie and start wretching blood, screaming the pledge of allegiance, and shooting his revolver into the air while pissing red, white, and blue".

It's a sad definition that has made talking about relatively normal things completely untenable.

Calm down, you're not making any sense.
Notice how I'm not posting any reaction pics. I don't save them on my computer because I'm not a pathetic little bitch.

What will you post next? A cockmongler-pic and "this is you" as the text?
>>
>>371221
So you're just shit posting at this point. Do you even know which post I made?

I'm sure you do, but it's more convenient for you to say you don't at this point in time.

The ones about if 4chan was still an anime site and then it devolved into "umad" and I can't tell which side you or the other guy you're responding to were on.
>>
>>371228
Saving and posting reaction images is something that only a few autists do. Most normal posters can argue without using reaction images.
But hey, you deserve praise for using only a few anime reaction pics.

i think a lot of what changed is that people on here now are the same people from back then, we're just older now. i've been here like seven years now, it was pretty shit back then, yeah, but we were all a part of the shit. we were just a bunch of stupid fucking kids who didn't have any friends. now we're stupid fucking adults who don't have any friends.

mods reset post counts several times in the old days
like the zero hour meme
>>

>>memes are extremely shallow, nothing as varied as bane, ben garrison or modern spurdo
So your point is that old memes died for being stupid and shallow and were replaced by better memes? The issue with that is that the old memes that survived are some of the shallowest:
>Obsession over gets (didn't start on 4chan but has been part of the site since it started)
>likewise the king of gets has been around for nearly a decade
>the gb2 abbreviation has been around for nearly all of 4chan history and while less common now, is still used
>the stick it in the pooper or sharpie in the pooper meme has been around forever on /b/ and is still very common
>the tits or gtfo phrase has been around about as long and is still very commonly said
>the rules of the internet are still commonly referred to although most /b/tards only actually know rules 1, 2 and 34
>the term /b/tard has been the accepted word for a member of /b/ for almost all of the board's existence
>Yotsuba has been the site's mascot since the beginning as far as I know
>the constant use of the word faggot along with words like newfag and oldfag and phrases like OP is a faggot have been around for ages
>the word cancer to describe that which is wrong with 4chan has been around nearly as long as the very first major changes to 4chan culture
>Boku no Pico being used as a go to anime suggestion on /a/ is very old
>the word copypasta has been used for a long time although I can't think of any old copypasta actually still in use
>There are probably tons of others but you get the point, old memes are not dead

All in all I would say the 'best' (as in those that survive the longest) memes are just words and phrases, which many often don't even think of as memes, which can be easily repeated and passed on to the next generation without required originality like images do to remain relevant. It also doesn't make sense for normalfags to adopt these phrases unlike with funny images, allowing them to remain 4chan.
>>
>>369948
>a lot of people are very clearly underage
You make it sound like this isn't still just as much still the case today
>>

I like the use of fag as a suffix, it's actual kind of useful.

Memes have always been cancer because you already know what the punchline is. The only time 4chan is ever amusing is when somebody posts shit that they come up with themselves. Even if it's unfunny garbage, original content is better than memes.
Pic not really related.

4chan has reached its peak; nothing will ever be funnier than this banana. It embodies a level of humor newfags and autists can appreciate, yet it's meta and absurd enough that oldfags and pseudo-intellectuals can analyze its usage. It transcends new memes, too. Whenever there's a new meme, it's only a matter of hours before somebody photoshops this banana onto it.
