Yes /pol/ exists, and I prefer it existed. But now it's becoming a new /b/ without some of the civic culture that made it famous, just for fearful shitposters who actually believes the memes, and believe themselves as redpilled.
I remember gamergate could open a true debate about shilling, then /pol/ create a /v/ character, but shitposters believe they could express their repressed ideology through 4chan and destroyed the oportunity.

4chan has been attacked for years for one reason or another. I doubt the "intellectual," minds that run the Verge would skip on any opportunity to portray it in a negative light.
This site has millions of users all over the world. Openly racist shit gets peddled on any number of sites like Facebook, Twitter or Tumblr, but only in the case of 4chan (and Reddit) does the media see the site as a whole as a target and that has more to do with it's infamous reputation originally built by people who didn't understand the internet in general without taking anonymous imageboards into account.
It's also blatantly political. You'll never see these sites clamoring over the danger Twitter or Facebook represents, but you'll see them do it for 4chan, because the latter has that reputation for not caring an iota about political sacred cows the former two give lip service to.

Facebook and twitter (tumblr to a lesser extent) are treated as transparent, almost like the legal sense of a common carrier, because everyone uses it now. I do remember these websites/services getting a lot more criticism when they were new and fewer people were using them, but these days they're basically like Kleenex toilet paper. Just kinda there.
4chan on the other hand has a relatively small userbase and has a unique culture it enforces on its users that is much more obvious than the culture of social media websites. Using 4chan is not easy nor is it fun for beginners and the chance of communicating with people you know is basically 0% (thank god).
