We all know /co/ has a problem with generals, to the point some have to be outright banned when new episodes aren't airing.
But when does a general meet the criteria for being banned? Take the Jessica Jones "talkback" that's currently on it's 5th thread, Luke Cage edition. If it continues for another week, should it be banned due to no new episodes coming for a year at the very least? Or should it be left alone since it's not spilling into other threads?
>>
>when does a general meet the criteria for being banned?
As soon as it becomes a general.

Fuck generals.
>>
>>355492
>But when does a general meet the criteria for being banned?
- when the general is faster than the board it's on
- when people in said general care only about fanart, fanfics and the general itself rather than the IP the general is made for
- when mods feel like it
- when waifufags have pissed off enough people
>>
>>355492
>If it continues for another week, should it be banned due to no new episodes coming for a year at the very least?
Ayy lmao. The Frozen general got to #1000 before the mods finally banned it.
>>
>>355495
>when does a general meet the criteria for being banned?
When it becomes a general, all generals should die

quints of truth

Create /ag/ and /cog/. /vg/ showed containing generals in a board mostly works.
>>
>>355638
Kill yourself anon. /vg/ shows that containing doesn't work as it becomes a cesspool that's worse then the rest of the site
>>
>>355665
Isn't that because generals are filled with people where the subject is a big part of their life?
People that want to discuss X on an internet image board everyday aren't going to be "normal" if that's what you mean. A thread doesn't really need to be up 24/7, especially if it's going to slow down drastically during the night.
>>
>>355492
/a/ is filled with generals too.

Just move all that shit to a /cog/ and /ag/ board. It keeps it from spilling into other threads.

If you delete the generals then people who want to talk about that show will talk about it EVERYWHERE.
>>
>>355850
No, it's because generals quickly run out of things to discuss and they always contain the same people. It's obvious what happens then, it becomes a circlejerk, offtopic discussion, rping, fanfiction and a chatroom. Shit like /v/ are giant cesspools, but things like /vg/ are just as bad if not worse because of a completely different reason

People go to generals for the topic and stay for the shitty sub-communities

>>355866
You ban generals, not cater to them
>>
>>355850
Basically. Generals are what happens when all the single topic threads about a subject cluster together into a single thread.
>>
>>355866
/cog/ would be literal shit though
>>
I'll never understand why people get so shitter shattered over Generals. Even if one thread ends up shitty, that's one shitty thread where people are having fun.

Sounds to me like people just want people to stop enjoying things tbqh
>>
>>355980
Because they are cancer

Because
1. They are cancer
2. They go against the way a Anonymous image board is supposed to work
3. They grow and create sub-communities
4. Those sub-communites grow into actual cancer
5. They don't stay in their generals and fucking spread
6. They take up a thread slot
7. There is normally more than a single general and you can lose more than half of the thread spots to shitty generals
8. These generals serve no purpose other than for people to circlejerk and wank each other
9. People no longer can discuss the topic of whatever the general topic is because making a thread seperate of the general will get invaded by the generalfags and itll be circlejerking instead
10. The generalculture is growing and instead of having thread topics that are creative and encourage different types of discussion you get general garbage instead and trying to do otherwise gets you nothing but shit
11. Did I say how fucking cancerous generals and the people who circlejerk in them are?
>>
>>355983
You forgot the mentality of any mention of the IP outside of its general gets a "keep it in the general" posts to the point that it can derail threads with this bitching.
>>
>>355492
>Take the Jessica Jones "talkback" that's currently on it's 5th thread, Luke Cage edition. If it continues for another week, should it be banned due to no new episodes coming for a year at the very least?

It should be banned for not being about comics or cartoons, same as the video game generals. To make matters worse, the janitors are too fucking lazy to delete the threads outside of the generals.
>>
Every board has a problem with generals.

>>355980
It's the mentality. Even newfags have picked up on it and tried to make generals for everything. All the new thread OPs look like them. They want that circlejerking, they want reddit, they want tumblr.
>>
>>355492
It's a whole season. Some people take a week or more to watch something of that length, because jobs/school/lives interfere with marathons.

So yes, I think intermittent threads are reasonable. It seems like most generals get culled not because of recurring threads, but because their respective bases turn to shit -- so it really depends on whoever inhabits them, and however long it takes discussions to go rancid.
>>
>>356739

>Every board has a problem with generals.

/v/ doesn't. :^)
>>
>>356397
Jessica Jones is a show about a comic retard
>>
>>355983

Could you possibly use any more buzzwords?

this is what all 4chan boards do. Generals are what all of 4chan's boards used to be like. You're just disgustingly new.
>>
What's bad about generals?

I mean what's the difference with having a general thread vs one with a random pic and question/comment on a show that will just become a de facto general anyway?
>>
>>356851
Moot wouldn't have brought them up as an issue in his Q&A's if that were the case. Not that I dislike them -- I've frequented a few generals myself -- but saying they're what 4chan used to be like is just wrong.
>>
>>356870
Because it actually has an aim. Generals exist for the purpose of just being there. People post the same things, ask the same questions for no other reason than keeping their threads alive. At the very least, starting it with something different reduces the monotony, and outsiders can't just Ctrl+F for their favourite thread about nothing.
>>
>>356870

The only general I go to is the nfl general on /sp/. It's useful since I can ask a question like thoughts on the upcoming Chargers vs Jags game which doesn't merit a separate thread.
>>
>>356870
>What's bad about generals?
The ones people complain about are the 24/7 generals that are kept up by people who can't come up with a good thread starters or want more porn/fanart of their waifu. These general foster a mentiality that "there should always be a thread about this subject/IP" and "any mention of the this subject/IP should stay inside of said general".

Generals are just normal threads and they should be treated as such but they should be banned once they start acting like sub-boards with the OP headers and referring to threads like they are separate boards (/hsg/, /sug/), they need to go.
>>
>>355983
>People no longer can discuss the topic of whatever the general topic is because making a thread seperate of the general will get invaded by the generalfags and itll be circlejerking instead
Some decent points there but this is a key one I think. Aside from the cireclejerking and in wanking, this shit is annoying. Threads don't start with a topic or because people feel the need to discuss something within the show, it's literally just made for the sake of it.
You can't really discuss much shit outside the general but the general is shit so you're pretty much screwed

/co/ had it worse at one point, mainly with Homestuck and Frozen that burned through threads like there was no tomorrow.

That being said it's still a problem. The RWBY general is nothing but fanart bullshit, the Steven Universe one is doing god knows what, the Star vs. The Forces of Evil is nothing but deviantart-tier fanfic nonsense, and the Toonami threads that don't happen on Saturdays are just used as an excuse to talk about anime on /co/ because they're all a bunch of fuckwits who cry that /a/ was mean to them and called them fags.
>>
>>356847
It's a show based on a comic, retard. And discussing the show is not the same as not discussing the comic.
>>
>>357174
You took the Toonami retards and you're going to keep them
