I actually am a ghostwriter, and I can tell you that this is NOT how it works. Nobody who works with a ghostwriter "writes much of the book on his own and hires this guy to reword it."
They write an outline, if they write anything at all. And you do some interviews. And then independent research. Then you work together, and THEN you write it, the whole thing, basically entirely from scratch. They might write the foreword, or whatever is supposed to be addressing the reader directly, but half of the pieces I've worked on had me write everything.
Now, that's not a bad thing; writing is not a skill set everyone has. If it were, I'd be destitute (because this is literally my only marketable skill). Trump is the kind of person who writes the way he talks, which is fine for Twitter, but terrible for long-form stuff. I'd hate to read something that he wrote personally, which isn't an insult, I promise.
It should also be stated that I'm a Trump supporter, and that this guy is an absolute piece of shit for even telling anyone that he ghostwrote this book. It goes against every single code of ethics ghostwriters have. The whole point of them is that nobody is supposed to know you were even involved. Our recognition comes from a paycheck, and unless it's specifically mentioned in the contract, we aren't even supposed to list a given piece in a portfolio.
