So, would this be considered a success or a failure to you guys? I'm surprised this movie made this much considering all of the empty theaters posted during its premiere. Why is that?
>From Box Office Mojo
M8 the budget was 144 million
>>81533074
Tickets cost $12.
>>81533282
Does that include advertising?
Technically, it would be considered a failure. Most movies with budgets that high are expecting to recoup a larger chunk in their opening weekend.
Also, given the poor word-of-mouth the film is getting, they can't rely on the audience to increase like many big budget films do. They may break even in 3-4 weeks, but everyone knows that's not actually 'breaking even'.
Big budget films can often bring in 4-5x as much as was spent. Then the toys, soundtrack, and franchise can generate even more money - if they're popular.
Nobody wants the toys. Nobody wants the soundtrack. Nobody wants merchandise. And nobody wants a sequel.
This is a failure.
not an expert on this stuff but that looks bad compared to budget and it's an actual bad movie that won't have a ton of staying power like other bad movies. seems like a bad performance considering all the publicity (albeit bad publicity) it got
irredeemably shitty movies are rarely huge successes so it had an uphill battle assuming it's as bad as it's supposed to be
>> $144mil budget (BEFORE MARKETING)
>> $65mil combined gross
>> #2 on opening week
By comparison, Fantastic Four had a production budget of $120mil and took in $59mil combined opening weekend.
So.......

The funny thing is that old Ghostbusters merch is selling. I was at a toy shop that had these $20 old Ghostbuster figures next to the new ones. I asked them how they were selling and they told me that the old ones were selling okay, just a little here and there but they didn't have a large stock anyway.
But they said they had about 4 times as much for the new film, and hadn't sold a single item. Not one.
ITT: people who don't understand how movies make money. With the overseas market and DVD sales and premium downloads and all that this this movie will make a hundred million in profit easily. It's performing as they expected it to. And it's apparently mildly entertaining which is all that's required for a good run.

>> Outside North America, the film grossed $33.1 million on its opening weekend from 43 countries from 8,996 screens, coming at second place behind Rogue Nation at the international box office
Meanwhile, GB made $19mil overseas. That's...almost literally nothing. This is a trainwreck.

I checked some historical data and of the top 300 grossing movies, the average total gross averaged 3.3x the opening weekend rake. That puts this abortion at about $150 million, which is midway between actual production costs and net production costs due to incentives, tax breaks, etc.
So factor in that the $144-$154 mil doesn't cover marketing costs, which must be astronomical, and the likely $150 mil total gross is not net of distribution, theater cuts, etc., this one's a bomb.

So we'd have to wait for the first week to be done before really calling it, but lets be honest, this movie is not going to make back 144 MILLION burgerbucks.
because literally nobody but feminists and their enablers want this movie.
The movie everyone wanted was Ghostbusters 3, and that would have made serious bank. But that died with Harold Ramis, and people accepted that there would never be a 3, only for this to get announced a year later, and to be a reboot, not to mention trying to play gender politics by being a "gurrrrl empowerment" movie, and shitting over all the accomplishments of the originals. Most egregious being that Winston was in the originals, the straight man to the other 3's oddness. The everyman. The average audience member stand in.
And meanwhile, Patty contributes to that by being a generic black stereotype. And also being just plain unpleasant to look at.
This pissed of about 3 entirely different audience groups that should have been it's target, and then made it worse by playing to the media's feminist angle about how only basement dwelling meninists hate the movie and if you criticize it you are a sexist. Which pisses off more people.

Films need to usually double the budget just to break even.
So, 144 million needs 290 to break even before taxes in most places, and really in terms of opportunity cost for the industry needs to beat that by 10%. So the film is a major loser and likely cost Sony 120 million directly and perhaps as much as 200 million in sales from other more profitable movies they could have made with that money.

So add 90 million to the production cost at least. This needs 400ish to get its money back. They need more like 450 and since most of the production was likely loans with interest rates the real cost is 450-500 to earn a profit.
Tough business.

If it doesn't make back its production cost, it is considered a flop. Interestingly, only about half the budget is spent on production. The other half is marketing, which this film did HORRIBLY.
These days Hollywood makes most of their money from foreign box office receipts. If the movie plays well in China or India, for instance, it won't matter as much that US audiences hate it. Unfortunately, this is an outright SJW feminazi trashing of a beloved classic. I don't think it has a prayer of being popular anywhere if it isn't here. The picture is sunk.

If by "plot" you mean "the events of the film" then yeah, its pretty thin but there is an underlying lore that isn't explicitly spelled out: the assassin's hotel, the gold coins, the cleaner, Francis, Ian Mcshane's character, the impossible task, everywhere he goes there are allusions to the past being a big part of the plot and the viewer can only infer what it all means to the present. As soon as I saw it the first time I figured that they would do a prequel someday with a younger man playing John. The 46 million earned was what was projected, so I guess Sony can't be mad. But a lot of recent blockbusters have earned hundreds of millions during their opening weekends, dwarfing Ghostbusters' performance.
Expectations for this movie are so low now that I think Sony will be happy just to break even and end the franchise. Losing the Chinese market suddenly also guarantees that there will be no sequels.

This is a prime opportunity to destroy regressive leftist-controlled media. Show the world Hollyjew's race/gender/religion-baiting tactics in TV, movies, and even news media so they'd boycott American media all together until it collapses. And when the seditionist elements of Hollyjew have been disenfranchised and chased out of media, it would allow real Americans to take over and begin undoing the damage done for decades.
The Chinese government banning Ghostbusters alone really rekt leftists, hard. They know leftist BS is poison and must be prevented from being consumed by the Chinese, especially if they want to remain in control - only their brand of BS is allowed. Eventually, America (leftist-free) would have to begin undermining Chinese society and government through culture exports (i.e. media), but keeping the left from poisoning more people with their insanity is good, for now.
Some critics, like that Angry-guy-whatever, led more people to openly reject leftist media - this should be encouraged, even if some of them would only do it for attentionbux. There are plenty of useful idiots willing to be used out there.

If the movie (including production and marketing) costs $100M, the Jews of Hollywood want $200M - $100M to recoup their investment and $100M profit. To them, $200M is breaking even. Any less than that is a failure and whoever were involved just got their careers ruined, or at the very least they don't get to make high-budget movies anymore. Feig is probably going to be reduced to making shit Adam Sandler movies with minimal investment aimed at jewing Jews, or Rogen movies aimed at poisoning the minds of goys.

Ghostbusters 2020 should star Rainn Wilson, Chris Pratt, Daniel Radcliff, and that kid from life of PI Suraj Sharma.
After the events of Ghostbusters 2, the Ghostbusters became a profitable corporitized, global company handling paranormal shit everywhere and employing weirdos, autists, and foreigners to do Ghostbusting.
But, 4 years before the movie, a strange incident (maybe involving a couple original Ghostbusters and the current CEO played by Melissa McCarthy) went down and business has been steadily drying up and Ghostbusters Intl is slowly being closed and sold off.
Our heroes do some shit and discover that a global coordinated effort has been happening to destroy earths defenses against ghosts.
The 4 new Ghostbusters have dramatic encounters and have to actually learn vast amounts of theology, mythology, and shit to expose and defeat the evil CEO Melissa McCarthy as she tries to unleash (cuz she was a demon sent to destroy Ghostbusters you see). The Ghostbusters are helped in the climax by a strange Egyptian frog god who does not wish to see permanent slavery for humanity.
I'd pay to see that movie.

>Because that's literally what the director said, and he called it the 'low end.'
Wow.

When Ramis was alive they were pitching Kal Penn, Chris Rock, Jack Black, and Maya Rudolph. That could have worked. I like all of them. But I'd swap out Black for Seth Rogan. I know, he's a jew, but he's still pretty funny.
Name your GB dream team, anons. I'm curious.
