why do 90% of atheists use literal interpretations of the bible as "proof" of its falsehood, when its obviously supposed to be taken figuratively and metaphorically?
>>
Because 90% of Christians take genesis as a literal interpretation.
>>
>>81525372
This. To be fair a lot of internet atheists are autistic so nuance isn't something they grasp.
>>
>>81525108
Most atheists don't. A better question is; why do most Christians interpret the Bible so that it fits perfectly with their culture?

Ahh yes, the good old strawman. There is authority, the government and society. If anything, it actually makes atheists more moral because the consequences of illegal behavior is acute and instant. (most) People have evolved with the ability to feel empathy and not screw people over for there own personal gain.

But if I were a christfag, I could just ask god for forgiveness and all would be amended. Who cares if I do something horrible in this life? It will all be forgotten after I die, if I pray to Jesus every night.

Most atheists believe that this is the only life you have so that's a pretty good incentive to live it the best you can.

Christfags always fall for lies

Number of atheists who actually wear fedoras? Statistically non-existent. Just another lie the puddinheads fell for.

This is really only true of Catholicism and even then you have to make the intention and try not do it again. Other sects of Christianity and other religions are much more strict.

If the entire book is metaphorical then you're admitting it's literally a book of fairytales so why would you follow a religion as such? That all depends on your conception of god. We know that the bible was written by several authors and they took many stories from near by cultures and modified them.
They used the bible as a tool to present moral ethincal and social conundrems to its readers.
But why does this mean the book has no relevance to a god? The fact the book and writings were used that way does not mean the book itself is not connected to a god or a conception of god in some way.
>>

But we can admit that, unlike religious bluepilled fools who apparently know everything by using circular logic.

And as we have before we ll prove you wrong by using science and then religion will have to move their gods behind another unknown again and the cycle will repeat as it has with bushes, animals, trees, mountains, the sky and the universe.

Does that mean we should abolish religion? No. The sheep need it to function. Thinking too much, for themselves is too hard. It gives them all the answers in a simple one liner that they can memorize and chant.

OP, atheist here. I'm being totally serious when I ask these questions

The central dogma of Christianity is that faith is required to be a believer because God can not be proven.

I've only heard fedoras talk in absolutes they barely have any comprehension of.
>>
>>81533954
The Big Bang wasn't an explosion like a stick of dynamite, it was just the beginning of rapid expansion of space

>>81533897
It follows that it is RATIONAL to abuse others when its beneficial.
you might act irrationally or not according to your espoused beliefs, well, thats another matter.
>>
>>81534087
The faith justification can be used to justify belief in literally any made up story, and when using rational thought, the belief that your specific ancient myth has it correct is nonsense. Your line of reasoning could be used to justify belief in any myth of your choosing, even Santa Claus.

>>
>>81534489

This>>81534337 in addition to the fact that the bible is increasingly contradicted by our highly developed system of gathering information about our reality, leads any rational person to believe that yes, the bible is indeed a myth written by ancient peoples, and not a personified universe master wizard.

>>
>>81534655
>I understand, but then they'll start with the "hurr hurr nothing exploded into everything muh atheism doesn't make sense" memes.

It's called basic logic and observable Newtonian physics. Unintelligent matter doesn't move itself, it has to be moved by a higher power, like heat, wind, etc.

Matter has attributes. One of them is gravity.
There is no hocus pocus or intelligence behind that.
It simply is.

Do you know why objects have different colors? Did god make objects a certain color?

Stfu. If your not hurting anyone and your not pushing your beliefs on others who the fuck cares. Obviously some shill is sliding the board because there is a thread up they dont like. And this stupid muh beliefs post gets everyone every time.

Jesus im so ashamed by all of you.

Why can't you answer the question?
I've really got you fedoras by the balls right now.
I'll re-query. Right, so you guys are saying a Newtonian order existed before the Bigbang, and this Newtonian order reorganized the remnants into the collections of matter we see today?

You'll never get a straight answer out these guys. Because they will realize how stupid it is to criticize religion when they believe that the laws of physics just existed before everything else and nothing created those laws.

Atheists are nothing more than pretentious bastards that let their mediocre public educations go to their head.

No scientist or anyone that's ever read an article on the big bang has ever said that.
When the universe popped into existence, so did its own laws of physics.

There's your problem. Read some quantum and you'll see this shit happens all the time m8. Especially do research on he quantum foam. Enjoy getting rekt.

Right, so you're saying inanimate matter popped up out of nowhere, rapidly expanded itself, created laws governing it's existence, and bestowed particular parts of itself with intelligence?

Maybe if someone is a dogmatic atheist it would mean that. Try not lumping agnostics, and other people who posit an anti-theist teleology, with those people, they are a tiny sliver of people who question organized religion.

Oh you mean like most fiction stories? Non-fiction books should absolutely be interpreted literally.
>>

The universe didn't expand into space, the universe is space. The expansion is empirical, you get it from looking at distance measurements of other galaxies.
If you're asking me what happened at the exact instant of the Big Bang that created the whole thing no one knows that, I'm specifically responding to the idea that matter "moved itself" in the early universe.

>If you're asking me what happened at the exact instant of the Big Bang that created the whole thing no one knows that, I'm specifically responding to the idea that matter "moved itself" in the early universe.

If the universe originated as a super-condensed collection of matter created by a rapid expansion of space, and the universe is space, then it logically follows that the collection of condensed matter moved itself.

Your critique does nothing but show your ignorance of Classics. It's not "fiction" or "non-fiction." Those two distinct categories of writing are a modern convention, and the fact that you think they're applicable to an 1800-year-old compendium of different works with radically different genres and intentions from a wide variety of literary cultures merely establishes your ignorance.

Consider Plato's Socratic Dialogues; they blend actual statements by Socrates and real conversations with Plato's personal philosophy, as espoused by invented statements made by characters within the story. This was very typical of the educated Greco-Roman world, which was of course the world in which the foundational books of Christianity were written (the NT was written in Greek, the lingua franca of the Roman Empire). Fiction and non-fiction bled into one another, since the primary intention was to convey a message, not report impartially. Greco-Roman readers would read work with this understanding.

It's also worth remembering that the Bible is not one book. It's a huge collection of highly dissimilar theological documents; this is why there are four gospels which appear to contradict one another. Some books in the Bible are included for their historical context, some for their narrative content, and some simply because they are foundational elements of the faith of 0AD Judea.

This kind of thing is exactly why Catholic churches are doing well while Protestant churches are dying in the desert. Encouraging people with no education in history, literature, theology, or classics to "interpret" the Bible, be they atheists or religious, will only produce incorrect conclusions. You lack the necessary knowledge to even approach the material. FFS you actually thought "fiction" and "non-fiction" were terms which might be applied to a diverse anthology of ancient and Greco-Roman theological documents.

When you get on a train and sit down, you're not moving but you're physically being moved.

Matter rests in the medium of spacetime, which empirically has been expanding since the Big Bang. The matter is not moving, it's being carried by expanding space. Picture making some marks on a deflated balloon and then inflating it, that's what's happening to the matter. If you're asking why the expansion is happening I can't say for sure.
