Consider Plato's Socratic Dialogues; they blend actual statements by Socrates and real conversations with Plato's personal philosophy, as espoused by invented statements made by characters within the story. This was very typical of the educated Greco-Roman world, which was of course the world in which the foundational books of Christianity were written (the NT was written in Greek, the lingua franca of the Roman Empire). Fiction and non-fiction bled into one another, since the primary intention was to convey a message, not report impartially. Greco-Roman readers would read work with this understanding.
It's also worth remembering that the Bible is not one book. It's a huge collection of highly dissimilar theological documents; this is why there are four gospels which appear to contradict one another. Some books in the Bible are included for their historical context, some for their narrative content, and some simply because they are foundational elements of the faith of 0AD Judea.
This kind of thing is exactly why Catholic churches are doing well while Protestant churches are dying in the desert. Encouraging people with no education in history, literature, theology, or classics to "interpret" the Bible, be they atheists or religious, will only produce incorrect conclusions. You lack the necessary knowledge to even approach the material. FFS you actually thought "fiction" and "non-fiction" were terms which might be applied to a diverse anthology of ancient and Greco-Roman theological documents.
