I predicted high 30's to high 40's

Will make about 400 world wide.

Basically take "Spy" box office figures and add a bit more on top.

It's extremely weak compared to the performance of the original, but so are many remakes.
>>
>>81495348
I'm not surprised, it really is a fantastic movie, I'm hoping other studio's take note and remake classis like taxi driver, godfather, deliverance and the shining with an all female cast of top grade American comediennes.

>Ghostbusters

>Opening in second place with roughly the same number as "The Heat" with a lower audience score, a film that went on to gross less than the budget of Ghostbusters.

It's performance is basically on par with it's critical reception (from non politicized factions): mediocre.
>>
For non tv nerds:

- Production + advertisement roughly 300mil
- Studio gets around half the money the movie makes (more this weekend, less from europe though)
- So this needs to gross upwards of 500mil to break even
- Star trek and ice age will kill it next week and it will drop by 70% give or take

It's a flop. We won bros. The sequel talk is damage control by the studio
>>
>>81496128

It didn't even lose to Secret Life.

Secret Life already opened last week.

It lost to the SECOND WEEK of a talking dog movie from an independent studio.

Sony are fucking morons.
>>

Bait but I'll reply anyways.

Who says the rate they're making money at is sustainable?

Numbers a week or two from now will be more telling, once word of mouth spreads.
>>
http://www.vulture.com/2016/07/paul-feig-ghostbusters-reboot-c-v-r.html

>As opening day approaches, Feig can’t help but think about the stakes of making a $150 million movie. “A movie like this has to at least get to like $500 million worldwide, and that’s probably low,

It's faring nicely above or similarly to opening weeks of movies like the martian, the revenant, interstellar, and many other good movies.

It also disproved the stormweenie meme about how no one wanted to see the movie.
>Numbers a week or two from now will be more telling, once word of mouth spreads.

Not even reincarnation or coming back as a ghost can make this flop a sequel. It's six feet under.
>>
>>81495348
If its true that the sequel is being discussed, that proves producers had no confidence in this, or they would have contractually locked the stars into a trilogy before the first day of principal photography
>>
>>81498019

>3 sheckles have been deposited into your account
>>
>>81497150

For reference it's the second highest opening for a remake of a 1980's comedy movie, behind The Longest Yard. That movie closed about 5 million short of Ghostbusters production budget. It also was released on far fewer screens and was much cheaper.

It's not a disaster. It's not a hit. It's probablg going to scrape by with international.

Looking at it as just a film...that's fine.

However, it's an IP that should have generated billions for them.

This is Sony for you. The mongs couldn't even figure out how to make Spider-Man profitable.
>>
>>81495348

Don't forget, Kids. Star Trek Beyond is out next week, so goatsebusters will have to compete against that. There's no way they're breaking even in the theater. Maybe with home video sales.

>>
>>81495348
The autists on /tv/ say that its production budget only accounts for about half of the money it needs to make to break even.
Unless it clears 450 million there will be no sequel.
>>
>>81497150

For reference the R rated supernatural comedy Deadpool made 130 million in it's opening weekend. With a budget 1/3rd that of Ghistbusters.

Best case scenario with this opening for Lady Ghostbusters is 150 mil domestic.

For reference: Adjusted for inflation the original did 675 mil domestic.

That's almost $700,000,000 when adjusted for inflation.

U.S. studios average about half the take on box office.

Foreign is anywhere from 25-50%.

Marketing spends vary wildly. People used to say about half of the production budget on top. But that's quite low.

So, being wildly conservative;

Budget + Marketing = 235

Break even = 470 mil global

Feig himself said they were looking at 500 on the low end.

A stellar performance is a 3.5 multiplier on your opening weekend.

So 175 U.S. is best case scenario for this release. A good international, at the most insane and generous is double your domestic - 350.

So the absolute best case scenario for this film is 525, which puts it nicely in the red.

This is hugely optimistic though. Films that do double domestic in the international market are the monster blockbusters like Pirates Of The Carribean or Transformers. They also always have China, which Ghostbusters does not.
>>
They are in big trouble - $50 mil minimum they didn't even hit - and I have a feeling they are in for a steep second week drop off
>>
>>81496912

Meanwhile, Independence Day 2 apparently disappoints despite being fuckawesome.

>no one in the cast supports the aliens
>everyone absolutely loathes the aliens
>their hatred is never thematized because it's taken for granted and not as a negative trait
>aliens barge into command bunker and the president just instantly tells her bodyguards to shoot because fuck negotiating with those alien fucks
>guy mocks aliens by pissing into their ship
>it ends with humans preparing to go out and buttfuck the aliens until they have been genocided

Independence Day 2's take on international relations is really refreshing. Counter genocide with genocide, without anyone thinking of being pro alien.

>>
>>81500818

No. This is all a myth except in Australia in the 80's or in Germany up until recently.

Even then it's not "losing money" and it's often related to illegal activity. One famous example was Rescue Dawn where the producers actively tried to sink the film.

The tax incentive schemes offered by both countries at the time ensured an investor a 100% tax write off unless the film turned a profit. At one stage it was a 150% tax write off.

People abused the system by associating themselves to the films as a "producer" and paying themselves huge salaries or making lavish purchases or investments as part of the production costs, which is all then recouped in the tax write off.

This is also how the infamous Uwe Boll was able to raise hundreds of millions of dollars for garbage like Bloodrayne, Far Cry, Postal etc.

He got something like 400 million upfront. Those gentleman then make a film for 30 million that actually cost about ten, spend the other 20 on "producer fees" and claim 45 million back on taxes when it's an inevitable flop.

In thanks part to Boll's almost comical exploitation of this tax scam they have shut it down.

Which sucks, because who doesn't love classic, awesome "German" movies like Die Hard or Predator.
