Americans would never elect Trump if he chose a meme VP, it would feel too risky since Trump is the least politically experienced person to ever get nominated. The point is that Pence won't hurt Trump. He's like a shadow. Trump looks better than the experienced politician (just like Hillary). He'll consolidate the RNC and end the Never Trump movement. Taps into the evangelical voter base (which is one of the largest). It was all around the best move. Gingrich is way too flashy it distracts from Trump. Nobody can be more exciting than Trump that's his campaign. Gingrich's recent comments on Muslims are not going to help Trump escape the brand of crazy racist the same for Sessions.
