It's the governments job to protect your freedoms and liberties. Due to multiple "contract" type violations of granted rights (contract slavery, dueling, companies requiring you to give up your right to vote to work for them, etc) the government made it illegal to enter into contracts that would forfeit any of your constitutionally granted rights.
Imagine if this was legal, and suddenly most companies required contracts that violated your rights in order to work for them, and that became commonplace. Suddenly fewer and fewer people in the country have rights.
