I think many Europeans who look at this photo and feel very off-put by it don't look close enough to understand the scale of things in the photo.
Look at the cars. Look at the size of the houses compared to them. Those houses are gigantic. Most of them are three stories tall and have finished basements. And big garages and swimming pools. They have 10 to 20 rooms each. You can get lost in the biggest of these houses, especially if you're a teenage couple trying to get away from your parents.
Lots of people can live in these houses. They are apartment buildings all to themselves in many ways. And the families that live in them cross over between each others "compounds" very often (or sometimes almost never, some houses are islands to themselves). House parties are a common thing in the summer.
Put all of this against the backdrop of the city portion of Las Vegas a few miles away. And the poorly managed school system. And everyone's parents work in show business and gambling in one way or another.
American Suburb culture is a funny thing without a whole lot of references for comparison in other parts of the world.

There's a nurse practitioner and a rural medical center. A damn good volunteer fire department and paramedics, and the dude who owns the little airport that the little twin engine BN islander planes run passenger service out of is a solid dude and will fly you off to the mainland in an emergency. There's a decent size grocery store that has everything you'd need. Honestly the boat doesn't run for a good 3 months in the winter when the lake is iced over. Supplies come on the plane then. Some of the more adventurous people will drive their pickup trucks across the ice to the mainland to stock up. 30+ miles across frozen Lake that's close to 500 feet deep in parts, no thanks. For museums Rijksmuseum is a no-brainer, although very crowded so plan your visit well. Dont try to see everything in 1 visit/day, theres simply too much.
Scheepvaart (Marine) museum is very interesting as well, including the 1700s replica of a typical trade ship next to the museum.
Escher museum is imo interesting, but not in Amsterdam. There's so many, just search for guides and see which artstyle interests you most and visit there.
I'd personally skip van Gogh but that's just my taste.
As for other cities, I'd recommended the smallerv but historic towns we have. The cities are all pretty much the same, and once you seen Amsterdam the others won't wow you as much. Utrecht is nice, The Hague is okay, not much there except a for a few big highlights.
Go for the smaller (well known) towns, near the sea or near Ijsselmeer (bigass 'sea' in the middle of our country). Marken is a really nice town (although touristy) to check out. Go check some windmills as well.

It really is a place where everything is like America used to be. Or was supposed to be. Everyone knows everyone. Everyone helps each other out. Everyone wants to work. There was a couple opening up a new motel a few years ago, they had a wedding coming up in 2 days, were totally booked and the place wasn't anywhere near finished due to delays. They would have been fucked. Having to pay all those people's money back before they even officially opened would have bankrupted them. The morning 2 days before, almost the whole population of the island showed up and asked what they could do to help. Carpenters did carpentry, their wife's put the furniture in, construction guys brought heavy equipment, 200+ people showed up everyone offered whatever they could and worked all day and the place was finished on time. Nobody expected any payment or anything at all in return. People here stick together like crazy due to the isolation.
