I think most people went into and out of this movie going "duurrrr racism is bad duuuurrrrrr"
But they don't take into fact that it was blacks that killed the father, blacks that tried to steal the truck, blacks that killed the little brother. It did bring up some statistics about how black commit more crime. It does touch on how they were unhappy that their neighborhood changed in a bad way and that blacks did seem to bring that change.
Overall I think it's underrated for a number of reasons.

Should've stick to the original script and show Edward Norton shaving his head again at the end, to make it clear that violence breeds violence, as that's supposed to be the original message.
The black principle in the movie was the most unlikely black man you could think of - Sydney Poitier voice and PhD.

This. The movie was incredibly moderate. Hell there was even a scene where you have a black guy talking about how he used to blame everything on white people, and how eventually he realized how retarded that mindset was. Also it ends with a black kid committing an unprovoked act of racially motivated violence, putting blacks in a bad frame at the end of the film.

If there was a race war it would be over quick and the whites would be the victors.
What the movie did is develop a false consciousness that black and white groups are some how equal in terms of the harm they can cause. It's a totally false message, whites still can do the most damage if they were an actually political/military unit.

If you go into it with an open minded look everything he did made perfect sense except becoming not racist. Spooks killed his dad when he was trying to help them. Spooks ruin his neighborhood and whites in the neighborhood deal with tons of racism. Whites band together and he's basically their best foot soldier. Spooks don't fuck with whites in the group because they know that there will be retaliation. An attack against one is an attack against all. Dumb spooks try to steal his car so he shoots the thieves. He meets a funny negro and apparently all the other shit doesn't matter anymore. While in prison his brother falls in with the group because they provide protection and brotherhood. He gets out and leaves the white group, taking his brother with him. He loses the protection of the white group. The spooks realize that neither he nor his brother have the protection of the white group anymore. They're too chicken to take him on directly. They target and execute his brother. If he had never left the group they never would've been brave enough to try that shit.
Also along the way a guy tries to get his mom to take a spin on his dradle, and he shits that jew down.
The only way you can see this as an anti racism movie is if you're a bluepilled retard.
Racism and neo nazism kept his family safe and protected.
