The point is too teach kids the principles and not encourage rote learning. A variety of methods are taught to accommodate different learning styles/abilities. Most reasonably smart kids will realise that 3*2 = 3+3 = 6 but you have a huge number of subnormal kids in public schools who need it spelled out for them.

This is fucking insane to me. I struggled with maths in school but rediscovered it at 21, and went to university to study it, graduated last year with first class honours. I'm still contemplating going into teaching, I don't see why kids with aptitude should struggle like I did just because the system is dumb as fuck but I couldn't bear to deal with this kind of shit.
