I'm working on a story about the great war of our generation. The prologue takes place from the end of the Cold War until Sep 11 2001. The beginning goes from 9/11 until 2020, when the war begins.
I'm up to the July 15, 2016 part of the story, but I need some help. Following the narrative format, I need an credible and established nation to formally back the Islamic Caliphate. I also need a fall country that's important enough to drag the western world into war over it. (France, UK, ?)
Who should it be?

I mean logically turkey would back the caliphate. They have been trying to conquer Europe fir centuries (and are finally succeeding). If you're looking for a country that could realistically start a war France and the US are the only two western countries with the gumption to start it off. France would have to get real authoritarian to stop things like what we saw today, though.

Yeah, I have Turkey in pencil because I don't see any other muslim majority countries doing it. Their governments benefit too much from the status quo.
The Fall of France would be much easier to write as the start of the war. I can't really see it being any other country. Not even Israel; it would just be the US and a couple other countries if Israel was the fall guy.
