Because unlike America, Brazil could not truly be independent. D.Pedro was just a continuation of the portuguese crown under a different name for the new created nation state.
And the whole ideology of freedom and industriousness brought by the founding fathers was divergent from the brazilian-portuguese way of just survive and get ahead of your countryman if you need to. The ethics and the value of education and freedom were very different between those two countries back then.

I friend lived in US for some good 15 years, he worked in a lot of states, NY CA, FL etc..
He told me he meet a lot of smart people there, but the found the general population really dumb (worse even than Brazil regarding this subject)
Ignorance about political, racial and geographical understanding over the world, like they are living in a bubble. Opinions like everything below south of US is Mexico, Europe is a country, crazy shit like that etc..

It's generated out of apathy, not ignorance. Most people will never leave the US, why should they care about Brazil? There are more important issues next door than across the gulf. It isn't living in a bubble, it's living in a community.
