I thought that the USA constitution promised a separation of church and state. So why does the republicans (the party that claims that they care the most about the constitution) wants a theocracy?

You can have theocracy and democracy at the same time. Unlike in our ally Saudi Arabia, there are regular elections in Iran. The most recent elections were won by a reformist party, but before that, conservative parties often did well. I'd like to see something similar in the west. A Christian fundamentalist supreme leader for life, alongside an elected president and elected parliament, with a religious constitution in place to prevent degenerates from being elected. DEUS LO VULT!

Because democracy doesn't work. America was founded on the idea that
1. Democracy is a superior system for political rule and organization than monarchy and
2. Freedom of religion, and thus separation of church and state, is possible and not only that, desirable. This was in response to what the settlers perceived as institutional decay in Europe. They weren't completely wrong.
But now the democracy experiment has run its course, and Tocqueville has the last laugh. Restore the monarchy, make the state religion the province of the King, and America will be great again.
