I was devasted when I went there, and I stayed for over a year. Yes I was one of those backpackers but I did not travel on the east coast where all the tourism is. I went basically everywhere besides the routes: brisbane to cairns, melbourne to sydney and perth to adelaide (which is basically the southwest because so much of the south coast is just nullaboor plains).
And yes I did drive out in the countryside and did all the australian things. Australian nature is beautiful which is what kept me there in the first place. Fishing, Swimming, Hiking, Climbing, Barbecue yadda yadda. And I went out of my way to meet locals and actually get to know them. Most of them were so superficial and sometimes a bit bitter. Also amongst themselves. It seemed like most australian friendhships don't go past the "oy mate let's drink" stage. This was the same case in the cities mixed with a couple of hipsters and "let's hit the club" dudebros. I worked in a busy bar in sydney for a couple of months during my stay and it didn't seem like the people who went there talked much about anything intersting. Just got drunk together (by 9:00 pm that is)
Did I do something completely wrong? Have I completely missed what australian "culture" is about? Enlighten me aussie cunts

The problem you have Hans is that you are so conditioned to think that culture is unusual practices (like wearing a skull on your head and dancing around with a pipe like some prehistoric caveman) that you don't see the culture right in front of you, in Germany and in Australia and in the UK. Granted Aussie culture is less diverse and certainly newer than Europe because it's a newer country but it's there none the less. I found Germany to be fairly miserable, expensive, full of stuck up left wing weed smoking cigarette smoking drug addicted self hating SJWs with an alcohol problem by the time they got past the age of 14 because every lesson I ever attended in a German school be it maths, history, chemistry or music there were constant references to the holocaust, WW1/2 and how the German's were the bad guys. For you to say the aussies were bitter, superficial and uneducated baffles me because I find them far nicer, happier and up for a laugh than any German I've ever met (and used to live there and have German family). Maybe it's a culture clash between the Aussies and the Germans because as a Brit I feel completely at home here, and so far I've barely gone and done anything but chill out in initial holiday mode. Only place I like more than Aus so far is Wales, because Wales will always be my home and I'll always miss it on my travels.

We have really high quality orchestras, opera singers, ballet companies, even beautiful old buildings in certain places. Most Australians are unaware of this, it is true, but these things are still here.
Also I agree that most relationships are very superficial. But the upsides outweigh the downsides, especially compared to everywhere else. I love Europe, but wouldn't go there now. Unless it was somewhere out of the way on the Greek Islands

I think the lack of culture has to do with the lack of patriotism. Even saying "happy Australia day" on facebook feels borderline socially unacceptable, because we are taught right through all our schooling that we are nothing but a bunch of evil convicts who came here and destroyed the lives of aboriginal people. (hence, saying happy australia day is like saying happy invasion day). We are literally never told there is anything here to be proud of... We are told diversity is our greatest strength, without that we have nothing. We are only 200 years old but we do have extremely beautiful cities and beautiful countryside.. Government arts funding here goes towards artists who reflect the notion "diversity is our strength" (I have looked into this recently).

As someone who has spent a couple of years in Europe, I can safely say that it's a bit of a shithole - I like the chilled out liquor licensing laws and shit which is typically heavily controlled in Australia, but thats pretty much it. The weather sucks dick, nobody does sport (and there are no ovals or sporting fields), high unemployment, wierd culture of relying on parents for everything, people have very little independence. Whereas in Australia we would work jobs from the age of 14 + 9 months doing some hard yakka working class shit. Most Europeans have their first taste in some kind of internship where you get arsefucked by your employer during university. Then they continuously do this until they get a job.
Life is actually very tough in Europe for someone in the lower middle class without family support.
