World of Warcraft adopted 'kek' in particular as the translation for 'lol' for the horde because it is the Korean approximation of laughter (like hue hue to BRs) and has been in use since the early StarCraft days (also by Blizzard).
WoW has it as a homage, but most people only remember that far back and assume it's where kek comes from.
It is, in fact, a Korean 'lol/jej/rsrs' from the olden days of Korean MMO gaming, almost as old as South Korea's independence from Best Korea and subsequent free online play.
If you've played Koreans before you'll remember it way before WoW (e.g. In 'GunZ:The Duel', an early 2000 game that predates WoW, Koreans were common and dominated the katana play scene, and spread kek as an alternative 'lol' even back then amongst the community.)
