>Four days after a deadly 2005 suicide bombing at the HaSharon Mall in Netanya, Israel, Johnson shared his thoughts about the Koran and "the problem of Islamic terror" in a column for The Spectator magazine:
>"To any non-Muslim reader of the Koran, Islamophobia — fear of Islam — seems a natural reaction, and, indeed, exactly what that text is intended to provoke. Judged purely on its scripture — to say nothing of what is preached in the mosques — it is the most viciously sectarian of all religions in its heartlessness towards unbelievers."

Will I slap a colleague on the back, Will I slap a colleague in friendship? The answer is – it is certainly possible."

On 18 February 2010 during a BBC Radio 5 Live interview he defended MPs travelling first class by saying that people who travelled in standard class on trains were a "totally different type of people." How does brit/pol/ feel about UKIP getting 12% of the vote and winning 0.002% of the seats while the SNP got 54 seats with 4.5% of the vote?

>>80902148

EU legislation can't come into effect without the Parliament's approval.

> they cannot propose legislation

This is to stop bigger Member States (who have more seats) using the Parliament to further their national interests over thos of the EU and of smaller Member States. Hence, power of initiative is vested in the Commission and Council, where every country has an equal say.

>and there is no concept of parliamentary privilege

It's not really needed desu. It doesn't work the same way as national parliaments.

>>80902352

The Parliament is elected by proportional representation, so it's not a two party system. The biggest party is the European People's Party and by convention, their candidate gets voted in as the Commission president. Hence why the EPP's Jean-Claude Juncker is president.

The "Commission Majority" - i.e. the parties of the Commissioners - is a coalition made up of the EPP, the Socialists & Democrats (S&Ds) and the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats of Europe (ALDE). The opposition is everyone else: the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) Nordic Green Left (GUE-NGL) and others.

>by what mechanism can the opposition replace the executive/commission?

Two-thirds majority vote by the Parliament dismisses the entire Commission.

>>80903873

FPTP is fine, it's already a representative democracy so you're not getting true democracy as it is.

You're also confusing FPTP with the limitations of a party system.

Currently, FPTP allows constituencies to have MPs that represent them - obviously this only barely works in practice, but under PR, there's literally 0 choice.

Even if FPTP doesn't let third parties get into power, votes for them still affect the actions of the leading parties (recent referendum was a direct result of increased UKIP support).

I'd still support a Swiss system, almost all legislation decided by the members of the public that possess an interest in it - no dumbshit voters being wheeled out every four years, no whipped career politicians voting for shit they don't care about.

Bad example I guess. I've never worker the tills at a super market. Did they not did they shop there?

Maybe they should be working at Argos. Easy as fuck jobs they could do there.

I'm not saying a disable person isn't handicapped just that if they aren't as productive they shouldn't have been given that job in the first place.

Threatened it once in 1999 which led to the Commission pre-emptively resigning. Other than that, no times.

I'm not sure how long that procedures been in place though, it might only have been brought in as recently as Maastricht.

>(I can't actually find the article detailing this mechanism though I'm sure it exists)

I couldn't tell you the treaty provision though. Never bothered to learn them off because a) EU constitutional law is a fuck massive area that's difficult to memorise in its entirety and b) we were allowed to bring the treaties into our exams.

>FPTP is designed to create stable majority governments by sacrificing voting share representation for 2 parties.

And you call yourself a democrat, disenfranchising most of your voters and having gerrymandering by design?

FPTP was used because it's a simple system, its shortcomings only become apparent after 100 or so years of it. We only realised how crap it was after seeing what happened to the US/UK.

>>80904281

>Exactly, it isn't democratic because of the confederal nature of the EU. Democracy requires a level of kinship with electors that Britain simply doesn't have with the EU due to our divergent historical paths (post 1689)

I wouldn't say it's not democratic necessarily, but you're right in saying it fulfils a different purpose. It plays a completely different role to national parliaments, it doesn't have nearly as much power in the day-to-day running of the Union as national parliaments do and is much more consensus-based. It's also closer to the continental system than the Westminster system in style, which is much more collaborative.

You've also got to recognise that it's current state is not its envisioned final state. It's essentially a work in progress.

>Currently, FPTP allows constituencies to have MPs that represent them - obviously this only barely works in practice, but under PR, there's literally 0 choice.

Depends on the type of PR. Our system, PR-STV, which we use for all our elections from local right up to European, works by having between 3 and 5 MPs per constituency, depending on size.

>I'd still support a Swiss system, almost all legislation decided by the members of the public that possess an interest in it - no dumbshit voters being wheeled out every four years, no whipped career politicians voting for shit they don't care about.

I wouldn't like that at all, way too many fuck the system protest votes on stupid non-issues. I'd rather professionals who treat governing as a full time job were elected, but reflect the ideology and wishes of those who elect them.

>Gerrymandering by design

Constituency boundaries are determined by independent bodies in each of the 4 UK countries respectively.
Politicians have no say in what the boundary changes are and they can't cherry pick them either, they get all of them or none of them.

We're not the US, the US genuinely does Gerrymander as elected representatives manipulate boundaries to benefit their parties. The UK does not gerrymander, we used to, we no longer do. Just look at the shape of most constituencies, they tend to be generally square or circular, you don't see the snaking or frequent irregular shapes you'd get with gerrymandering.

There are a lot of genuine criticisms to be made of our system but Gerrymandering is not one of them.

FPTP has its flaws but independent candidates from small communities stand a much better chance of getting to parliament.
Individual MPs can be held to the will of a local population very easily.
Gerrymandering shouldn't happen if the boundaries are drawn by an independent body.

Roughly 50/50 system of FPTP and PR gives something like this

CON 275 -55
LAB 207 +55
SNP 42 -14
LIB 27 +19
UKP 39 +38
GRN 12 +11
DUP 5 -3
SIF 3 -1
PCY 3 0
SDL 3 0
UUP 2 0
IND 1 0

Worked this our by hand the other day(some numbers might be off by 1 or 2) and forgot to write down the exact system but it was roughly 1 MP for every 2 constituencies won (rounding up) and 300 MPs allocated by PR.

Fair enough. I stand corrected. There are still an awful lot of "safe seats" though, which is problematic.

>>80906829

Interesting. I've personally never been a fan of list systems but that's my own STV bias.
